Winter Safety Tips for Motorists

✅Before you travel, make sure you have a winter safety kit:
• Blankets and warm clothing
• Food and water
• Flashlight and batteries
• Fully charged phone
• Full tank of gas

🚨If you become stranded:
• Stay in your vehicle. Leaving your vehicle can be dangerous in winter conditions. Stay inside where you can remain warm and visible.
• Keep your exhaust clear. If you run your engine for heat, ensure the tailpipe is clear of snow and ice to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
• Run your engine periodically for warmth, not continuously. Turn off unnecessary electronics to save your battery.
• Use blankets, extra clothing and layers to remain warm. Keep emergency supplies accessible.
• Turn on hazard lights when running your engine. If safe, tie a bright cloth to your antenna or door handle.
• Follow OPP social media channels, 511 Ontario, and local radio for accurate information.
• Call 911 only for emergencies. If you or someone in your vehicle is in distress (medical emergency, out of fuel, etc.), call 911.
• Follow the direction of police and emergency services personnel.

Avoid unnecessary travel and stay off closed roads. Your safety is our priority!

❄️ SNOW SQUALL WATCH ISSUED

Timeframe: Beginning Thursday morning and lasting through to Saturday

Environment Canada has issued an expansive snow squall watch for the Lake Huron and Georgian Bay snowbelt region.

Intense snow squall activity is expected to develop early Thursday morning and continue right into the weekend. These squalls could produce impressive snowfall rates of 5 to 10cm per hour.

With strong winds also expected, blowing snow will be an issue which could lead to reduced visibility and difficult travel at times.

The highest totals are expected east of Lake Huron, including areas like Port Elgin, Hanover, Kincardine, Goderich, Stratford, Kitchener and Guelph. Environment Canada notes that locally up to 30 to 50cm of snowfall accumulation is possible by Saturday.

For Georgian Bay, the squalls are expected to be a bit weaker, but they could still bring locally 15 to 30cm across Grey Bruce, Simcoe County and the northern sections of York and Durham regions.

We will have a more detailed forecast on the snow squalls posted soon, so stay tuned.

With the winter weather here Dufferin Detahcment OPP are sharing some great tips!

OUR ULTIMATE GUIDE TO NAVIGATING ICY ROADS IN DUFFERIN COUNTY

(DUFFERIN COUNTY) - Members of the Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) would like to remind residents and visitors that it's always better to arrive a little late than not at all. While the OPP is committed to keeping our roads safe, your safety begins with you. Drive smart, drive safe, and enjoy a worry-free winter season.

Winter Driving Tips for Dufferin County

Check Your Tires:

Ensure your vehicle is equipped with winter tires. These provide better traction on snow and ice, which is especially important in Dufferin County's often unpredictable winter conditions.

Keep Your Distance:

During the winter months, leave plenty of space between your vehicle and the one ahead. Snow and ice can greatly extend braking distances, so give yourself extra room to stop safely.

Watch for Black Ice:

Black ice is a common hazard on Dufferin's rural roads, particularly early in the morning and after dark. It can form quickly and is difficult to see, so always drive cautiously-even on roads that appear clear.

Know Your Roadways:

Dufferin County has a mix of urban and rural routes. Be extra cautious on less-travelled roads where snow can accumulate quickly and plowing may be less frequent. Keep a shovel, ice scraper, and blanket in your car-just in case.

Slow Down on Steep Hills:

Some areas of Dufferin County, especially near the escarpment, have steep inclines and declines that can become icy. Reduce your speed on hills and avoid sudden braking or acceleration.Stay informed by monitoring Dufferin County's social media channels and local radio for weather and road condition updates. Being aware of changing conditions can help you avoid dangerous situations.

Be Prepared for Snowstorms:

Dufferin County can experience heavy snowfalls throughout the winter. Before heading out, check weather and road conditions using the Ontario 511 website or app. If conditions are poor, it's always safer to stay home.

Keep Your Gas Tank Full:

If you're travelling through rural areas, make sure your gas tank is topped up. Cold temperatures can cause fuel lines to freeze, and you don't want to run out of fuel during a snowstorm.

Use Your Headlights:

Snowy, cloudy, or overcast days can reduce visibility. Even during the day, keep your headlights on when driving in winter conditions. It improves visibility for you and makes your vehicle more noticeable to others.

Don't Use Cruise Control:

Cruise control can be dangerous on slippery roads. It may cause your vehicle to accelerate unexpectedly if traction is lost, increasing the risk of losing control.

Clear Your Vehicle Completely:

Before driving, clear all snow and ice from your vehicle-including the roof, windows, headlights, and taillights. It's essential for safety and required by law in Ontario.

Keep Emergency Supplies in Your Car:

Always carry essentials such as a first aid kit, blankets, non-perishable snacks, water, a flashlight, and extra warm clothing. Winter conditions can cause unexpected delays or emergencies.

Listen to Local Alerts:

Stay informed by monitoring Dufferin County's social media channels and local radio for weather and road condition updates. Being aware of changing conditions can help you avoid dangerous situations.

Stay safe this winter, and remember: driving slower and more cautiously can help you avoid a slippery situation. Winter in Dufferin County can be beautiful-but it also demands extra care behind the wheel.

Dufferin OPP and Local Businesses Warn of Increased Thefts During Fall and Holiday Season

(DUFFERIN COUNTY) - The Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), in collaboration with local businesses, is alerting the community to a noticeable increase in theft-related incidents during the months of October, November, and December.

As the busy holiday season approaches, businesses are encouraged to remain vigilant and take proactive steps to safeguard their property, staff, and customers. This time of year typically sees a rise in shoplifting, theft from commercial properties, and other retail-related crimes.

Common Theft Tactics:
- Distraction techniques - One individual diverts staff attention while another commits the theft.

- Concealment - Items are hidden in bags, clothing, or strollers.

- After-hours break-ins - Businesses with limited lighting or surveillance may be targeted.

-Busy periods - Offenders often take advantage of peak hours when staff are occupied.

Theft Prevention Tips for Businesses:

-Secure high-value items and position them away from entrances.

-Ensure security cameras are fully operational and cover key areas, including entrances, exits, and cash registers.

-Train staff to recognize suspicious behaviour and respond appropriately.

-Restrict access to staff-only areas and stockrooms.

-Display signage indicating the use of surveillance cameras.

-Maintain adequate lighting both inside and outside the premises.

-Minimize on-site cash and make regular, discreet bank deposits.

The Dufferin OPP will continue working closely with local business owners, Business Improvement Areas (BIAs), and community partners throughout the fall and holiday season to promote safety and prevent crime.

Members of the Dufferin OPP remain committed to public safety and to working in partnership with the community to prevent and investigate crime. Community awareness and vigilance play a key role in helping keep our local commercial areas safe.

DUFFERIN OPP LAUNCHES CANADA ROAD SAFETY WEEK

(DUFFERIN COUNTY) - Members of the Dufferin Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) will once again participate in this year's Canada Road Safety Campaign.

Canada Road Safety Week (May 13-19, 2025) aims to increase compliance with safe driving measures in order to save lives. Its focus is on behaviours that put drivers, passengers, pedestrians and other vulnerable road users at risk, including the "big four" contributing factors for injury and death on our roads: impaired driving, distracted driving, speed or aggressive driving and lack of seatbelt use.

Of the 344 fatal collisions reported last year, excessive speed contributed to 95 deaths, while driver inattention was a factor in 80 fatalities. Alcohol and/or drug impairment was linked to 53 of the deaths. The notion held by some that seatbelt use is simply a "personal choice" had tragic consequences-60 unbuckled drivers and passengers lost their lives as a result.

While this public safety initiative is part of a national effort, our local efforts are always to make the roads in Dufferin County among the safest in the world. You can expect that Dufferin OPP Officers will be highly visible during this campaign to ensure your safety.^af
