Training is available for the Strychnine Stewardship Program, allowing producers in the 208 eligible Saskatchewan RMs access to strychnine for responsible pest control. Eligible producers are encouraged to complete their training in anticipation of supplies arriving in the province.

With a limited supply of strychnine expected in June, producers should prioritize registered alternatives, as well as biological and cultural controls, this spring.

🚑🌾 SOUTHWEST SPOTLIGHT: Regional Communities Working Together for Rural EMS

650 CKOM recently published a great article highlighting the work happening in Southwest Saskatchewan to strengthen ambulance services across the region.

Communities including the Town of Shaunavon, Town of Eastend, and surrounding rural municipalities RM of White Valley No. 49, RM of Grassy Creek No. 78, RM of Arlington No. 79 & RM of Bone Creek No. 108, have come together through the Southwest Regional Ambulance Committee to address ongoing challenges with recruiting and retaining Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals in rural areas.

Rather than facing the issue individually, municipal leaders chose to collaborate and find solutions that support long-term stability for emergency care in Southwest Saskatchewan. Their work has included advocating for improved rural healthcare capacity and developing new incentives to help attract and support EMS professionals in the region.

These efforts have led to the launch of the EMS & EMR Career Incentives Program, offering recruitment incentives, training support, and bursaries for students interested in pursuing careers in emergency response.

The program encourages both experienced paramedics and those considering EMS training to explore opportunities in Shaunavon and Eastend: two welcoming, family-friendly communities in a region known for its strong sense of community and quality of life.

RELEASE: Southwest Regional Ambulance Committee Making Strides in Strengthening Rural EMS Services

The Southwest Regional Ambulance Committee, representing the Town of Shaunavon and Town of Eastend, and the RMs of White Valley No. 49, Grassy Creek No. 78, Arlington No. 79, and Bone Creek No. 108, is proud to share the progress being made since the committee officially formed in February 2025.

Formed to address ongoing EMS staffing challenges and advocate for stable, sustainable emergency medical services across the southwest, the committee’s collaboration and continued advocacy are already making a difference.

Since its formation, the committee has worked closely with the Saskatchewan Ministers of Health, Saskatchewan Health Authority, and local partners, and is proud to share that several important milestones have been achieved:
- Expanded EMS coverage in the region, with positions increased from two 0.33 to two full-time equivalent roles at 0.67 each.
- Improved Eastend ambulance staffing, with 2 full-time EMRs now serving the community. These EMRs are utilizing the housing benefit in Eastend.
- Enhanced ambulance availability in Eastend, now operating 14 days each month.
- Supported recruitment success in Shaunavon, where two new Primary Care Paramedics (P*Ps) have been hired — resulting in two ambulances now running in Shaunavon.
- Sparked strong engagement through the EMS & EMR Career Incentive Program, with many inquiries from individuals interested in EMR training, showing a positive sign for continued regional recruitment.

“These milestones show the power of regional cooperation,” said Donald Lundberg, Reeve of RM of Arlington. “By working together, our communities are seeing real progress toward stronger, more sustainable rural EMS services.”

Looking ahead, the committee remains focused on advocating to fill the remaining open EMS positions in Shaunavon and Eastend, including two 0.67 Primary Care Paramedic (P*P) positions in each community. The committee will continue to actively promote the available incentives and highlight the exceptional quality of life in Shaunavon and Eastend as part of its ongoing efforts to support recruitment.
In addition, the committee plans to maintain a visible presence at career expos and high school events, encouraging and inspiring the next generation of rural EMS professionals.

The EMS & EMR Career Incentive Program, launched earlier this year, continues to offer up to $20,000 in recruitment funding, bursaries for high school students, and training support for future EMRs, helping build a resilient emergency response system across the Southwest.

RELEASE: Southwest Communities & RMs Launch Incentive Program to Support Rural EMS Careers

The Southwest Regional Ambulance Committee — comprised of the Towns of Shaunavon and Town of Eastend , along with RMs White Valley No. 49, Grassy Creek No. 78, Arlington No. 79, and RM of Bone Creek No. 108, is proud to announce the official launch of a new incentive program aimed at recruiting and retaining Emergency Medical Services (EMS) professionals in the region.

The EMS Career Incentives Program offers up to $20,000 in recruitment funding for licensed Primary and Advanced Care Paramedics, bursaries for high school students, and financial support for those interested in becoming Emergency Medical Responders (EMRs), including training coverage through the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA).

“This is about coming together as a region to address the urgent need for stable, sustainable EMS services in rural Saskatchewan,” said Donald Lundberg, Reeve of RM of Arlington No 79.

The program is a direct response to staffing challenges across the region and reflects strong inter-municipal collaboration and community investment in frontline healthcare.

In May 2025, the local officials and the Southwest Regional Ambulance Committee welcomed Minister of Mental Health and Addictions, Seniors, and Rural and Remote Health Lori Carr to Shaunavon to hear firsthand from SHA staff about current service gaps and challenges in local emergency care. The visit included leadership from SHA and a strong showing of municipal cooperation further reinforcing the need for strategic rural health recruitment.

As a result of continued advocacy, the committee has developed this community-driven incentive package to attract qualified EMS and EMR professionals—and support those who want to pursue that path locally.

Incentive and Bursary Highlights:
$20,000 Recruitment Bursaries for new Primary or Advanced Care Paramedics (P*P/ACP) committing to work in Shaunavon and/or Eastend for three years.

5 x $2,000 High School Student Bursaries for those accepted into an approved EMS program.

EMR Training Bursary - $1,000 + Full SHA Support: SHA covers training/enrollment costs (~$650 value) and SHA bursary of $2,000 will be provided for successful bursary applicants taking an approved EMR training program from the SHA. The SHA does not charge bursary recipients for EMR Training.

Return of Service Agreements to Shaunavon or Eastend ensures participants contribute to rural healthcare while receiving support.

To make the transition easy, The Town of Eastend and the RM of White Valley No. 49 are offering a rent-free three-bedroom home in Eastend. Utilities are included and the taxable benefit is covered.

This initiative is one more way the Southwest region is stepping up to build resilient health systems and ensure quality emergency care is available when residents need it most.
