Tonight, we're lighting the Water Tower red in recognition of World Blood Donor Day.

It's a tribute to the millions of voluntary, unpaid blood donors whose generosity saves lives every day.

This year’s theme, “One Drop of Humanity. Give Blood. Save Lives.”, places humanity at the heart of every blood donation, reminding us that each donation is more than a medical act: it's a lifesaving gift.

We’re happy to share that Selkirk Park will begin reopening in phases starting at 5PM on Friday, June 12.

The following areas will reopen at that time, as recovery efforts have confirmed they are safe for use:

• Campground
• Skatepark
• Dog Park
• Picnic Shelters
• Ag Building (including bookings)

Please note:
• Portions of the park’s trail system remain closed
• The boat launch remains closed due to debris and fast-moving water and will be reassessed on Monday, June 15.

Visitors are asked to follow all posted signage and respect closed areas. While safety assessments have been completed, risks may still exist. Please stay alert, watch for hazards, and be aware of your surroundings at all times. If you see any risks, please help us make the park safe by reporting them to CitizenSupport at [email protected]

An FAQ related to the campground is available here: campground.myselkirk.ca/stormFAQ

All campers, user groups, and individuals with bookings are being contacted directly with details specific to their needs. Please check your email if this applies to you.

Additional Information:
• Staff on site will not be able to respond to enquiries related to insurance claims
• You may notice that grass is longer than usual and maintenance is behind, this is inevitable as our teams have been focused on recovery efforts and will catch up as time permits.

Thank you for your patience and cooperation as we safely reopen Selkirk Park.

Selkirk Park remains temporarily closed following this week’s extreme weather event but we anticipated announcing a staged reopening date/time later today (June 12) once the assessment is complete.

City staff and contractors have been onsite clearing several downed trees and are addressing many other hazardous trees with hanging limbs in the park and near trails. Water and septic systems are being inspected and at this time the river remains unsafe to access from the park due to debris and fast-moving water.

Bookings in the park are managed on a case-by-case basis and city staff have been and will continue to work with event organizers.

Thank you for your patience as we continue to work through this.

Tonight, we light the Water Tower purple for Global Lipedema Awareness Day.

Lipedema is a little-known and underdiagnosed chronic medical condition that affects approximately 1 in 9 women. It forms a symmetrical buildup of adipose tissue in the legs, arms, and lower trunk, and can often case pain, swelling, heaviness, loose skin, and easy bruising.

While there is currently no cure, various treatments can help alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.

⚠️⛈️ A lot of rain, strong winds, and potential hail is in the forecast for Tuesday, June 9.

Here’s what you need to know:
- Water on the street is not an emergency. Our streets are designed to hold water at a controlled rate and it will eventually flow into our drain system.
- An emergency situation is when water from the street is approaching your home or has reached it.
- Do not open or tamper with manholes or other city infrastructure.
- City staff will be actively monitoring conditions.

Be prepared:
- Make sure your sump pump is plugged in and working (and the breaker hasn’t tripped) before the storm.
- Close your basement windows.
- Ensure downspouts are lowered and pointed away from your home.

If you experience basement flooding caused by sewer backup after business hours, please call 204-785-4900 and follow the prompts for water-related emergencies. Please do not contact the RCMP regarding water-related concerns.
