A good SAR night isn’t always about dramatic rescues or rough seas. Sometimes it’s smooth coordination, solid training, calm communication, and a crew that works together without missing a beat. It’s radios crackling, navigation lights reflecting off the water and everyone quietly doing their part.

It’s trusting the people beside you, learning something new every time you head out, and coming back to the dock tired, salty, and proud of the work put in. Those are the nights that build strong crews and stronger friendships. ⚓️

The best teams aren’t just built through hard work — they’re built through trust, camaraderie, and being able to laugh together even while getting the job done.

Not every SAR training night comes with perfect conditions and a sunset like this, but we’ll take it when we can. Grateful for the crew, the coastline, and the chance to keep building skills together out on the water.

Never Forgotten: Remembering Angela Nemeth and Beatrice Sorensen

On June 3, 2012, Angie and Beatrice, volunteers with RCMSAR Station 12 Halfmoon Bay, lost their lives during a routine training exercise in the Skookumchuck Narrows.

They volunteered their time to help others in distress on the water. Their loss was - and still is - deeply felt across the search and rescue community and remains part of our collective history.

Every time our crews head out to train or respond to a call, they do so knowing that service on the water carries risk. Angie and Beatrice's commitment, courage, and dedication to helping others continue to inspire volunteers across RCMSAR.

Today, we pause to remember them, honour their service, and keep their families, friends, and fellow volunteers in our thoughts.

Behind every “routine tow” is a team that trains hard for it. Training days like these build the confidence and muscle memory needed when the calls are real, the weather turns ugly, and people are counting on us.

Grateful for a crew that shows up ready to learn, adapt, and put in the work.

It’s National Volunteer Week!

Are you looking to be a part of a volunteer team that gives back to your community? We are recruiting board members to join the Sunshine Coast Marine Rescue Society!

The SCMRS is the fundraising and financial support organization behind Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (RCMSAR) Station 12 — Halfmoon Bay. SCMRS helps keep Station 12 mission-ready through practical, behind-the-scenes support. Our work includes fundraising, donor management and recognition, financial stewardship (asset/fund management), risk management (including insurance), and the disbursement of funds to cover approved Station expenses. This work ensures the Station can maintain readiness and support local safety efforts across the marine community.

SCMRS is actively seeking board members—the people who help secure grants, manage finances, and organize fundraising so our vessels and equipment stay ready. Meetings are typically monthly, with extra coordination around events and grant cycles.

If you are interested in joining our team, please contact SCMRS President, John Maddalozzo [email protected]

On behalf of Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue Station 12, thank you to the more than 115 guests who joined us for an evening of unforgetable support - and to everyone who supported by donating, buying raffle tickets and participating in the silent auction or donating items at our recent fundraiser.

From the incredible catering by Tk's Gourmet, to the music by Rebeca Lorna and Jeremy Forester, and the energy of our live auction led by Ed Hill the night was a true reflection of community spirit.

Partway through the event, that spirit was put into action. Our crew received a callout and immediately responded—leaving the fundraiser to do what they’re trained to do: help those in need on the water.

It was a powerful reminder of why your support matters.

Your generosity and community spirit made the event a true success. Because of you, our volunteer crew can continue to train, maintain our vessels, and respond when it matters most—saving lives on the water.

At RCMSAR 12, we’re proud to serve this coastline, but we don’t do it alone. Your support powers every training exercise, every rescue response, and every safe return home. To our volunteers, sponsors, and supporters: your time, effort, and commitment do not go unnoticed. This work is only possible because of you.

We’re stronger because of this community, we’re proud to serve it, and deeply grateful to stand alongside it.

With sincere thanks,
RCMSAR 12 Crew
