It was so cool to see our little lights spread from one woman to another.

Naskapi Women’s gathering 2026

Today was the first day of the Naskapi Women’s gathering 2026, hosted at our very own Ka Mamunuiitananuch Cultural Site.

Many communities have been arriving, and we have been helping get everyone's tents set up.

Tonight, we hosted a sewing group while we waited for everyone to get settled, then met in the large tent for a big dinner. We played games, sang, howled like moose & bears, and then settled down for a candlelight vigil and a drumming session.

It was really emotional. Some women cried. Some women had physical reactions. Some hugged. Everyone supported everyone else. And that's why we're here, to be there for our sisters.

We're so grateful, it even felt like the sky lit up for us. We're really looking forward to this week.

We're so excited.

Both our men and women have been hard at work at the Ka Mamunulitananuch Cultural Site, preparing it for the Women's Gathering, which kicks off tomorrow.

We have been setting up tents, gathering and laying out branches, building bed platforms, building the stage and dance floors, cooking, cleaning, and hauling things around the camp.

Some of our younger workers have never done some of these, and so we're using it as an opportunity to teach some of our traditional ways.

We cannot wait for you all to join us.

Our offices will be closed on Monday, September 7 for Labour Day.

We reopen Tuesday, September 8.

If you need something from the Band Office, come by before the weekend or wait until Tuesday. Emergency contacts are always available.

Still hiring: a Caterer for the Jakoush Elder's Day Center. We have extended this posting, so there is still time to apply.

Our Elders deserve good food, made well and made with care. This is the person who cooks and serves their hot lunches.

🍲 Cook complete meals: soup or appetizer, main course, dessert
🥣 Adapt meals for chewing and swallowing needs, and watch for low-sodium and diabetic diets
🗓️ Contract, three days a week, Tuesday to Thursday, daytime, 12 meals a day
🫐 Ability to cook traditional food for our Elders. Spoken Naskapi an asset.

Deadline to apply: Friday, September 11, 2026

Good meals help our Elders stay well and stay in their own homes. If that work appeals to you, we would like to hear from you.

Have you or your family lost a child, who was sent down south for medical reasons and never returned?

AWACAK is visiting our community and would like to help you find them.

They will be at the Naskapi Community Center tonight at 6pm. There will be snacks and a presentation.

📍 Today we are meeting at the Naskapi Community Center at 6:00 PM.

Have you lost track of a child after a medivac?

If a child was sent to a Quebec institution before December 1992, Bill 79 gives families the right to access medical files and religious archives to help find them. AWACAK is a families association that helps reconnect families with children lost after a medivac, and they are here now to sit down with people.

They can help with:

Accessing medical files that Bill 79 unlocks for children sent to Quebec institutions before December 1992.

Religious archives, which can also be searched to help trace and reconnect families.

Family support, with compassionate guidance through the search process.

If this is your family, or you think it might be, come to the Community Center at 4:00 today. You do not need to have documents or answers ready. You do not need to know where to begin. You only need to come.
