Recently, we highlighted windows in the Administration Building—this month, the focus shifts to the Powerhouse.

Work is nearly completed on the building’s distinctive porthole-style windows. These circular windows are a defining feature of the structure, bringing natural light into the space while reflecting the industrial design of the era.

The Asset team is replacing the glass and recreating the frames, carefully matching the original design while ensuring they can stand up to the elements for years to come.

It’s detailed, hands-on work that blends craftsmanship with conservation—protecting both the structure and the story it holds.

Conservation often happens in the details.

We’re looking for volunteers to support programming and help beautify the grounds at the Sault Ste. Marie Canal this season.

Volunteering is a chance to contribute to conservation, engage with visitors, and become part of the ongoing story of this historic site.

June is National Indigenous History Month—a time to recognize and reflect on the histories, cultures, knowledge systems, and enduring contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.

Long before canal construction reshaped this landscape, this place has always been a part of an important network of travel, trade, governance, and connection. The waters of this region have long carried stories, relationships, and ways of life that continue today.

At the Sault Ste. Marie Canal, we encourage visitors to learn more about these layered histories through meaningful reflection and experiences like our Echoes of the Rapids guided tour, which explores the deep Indigenous connections to this place.

Understanding this history helps us better understand the place itself.

Warmer days bring more visitors back to the Canal—including plenty of four-legged ones.

We love seeing dogs enjoying the site alongside their people. If you’re visiting with your pup, feel free to stop by the Visitor Centre—we’re always happy to offer fresh water and a treat for some of our favourite visitors.

To help keep the Canal safe and enjoyable for everyone, please remember:
✔️ Dogs must be kept on a leash
