June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada—a time to honour the histories, experiences, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis Peoples, and to reflect on the ongoing impacts of colonization and our shared role in reconciliation.
Here in Bawating (The City of Sault Ste. Marie), we also recognize the deep history and leadership of the Crane People—Jiichaak Dodem—including Chief Shingwauk, who was of the Crane Clan.
Darrell Boissoneau, Knowledge Keeper/Teacher at the Anishinabek Police Service, recommends these resources for those looking to read, learn, and reflect:
• Seven Fallen Feathers by Tanya Talaga
• The Knowing by Tanya Talaga
• Upholding Sacred Obligations: The Final Report on Missing Children and Unmarked Graves by Kimberly Murray, Independent Special Interlocutor
• The Mishomis Book by Dr. Eddie Benton-Banai
• 94 Calls to Action from the Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada
• Di-Bayn-Di-Zi-Win – To Own Ourselves by Jerry Fontaine and Don McCaskill
The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service deeply values our partnerships with Indigenous communities and remains committed to listening, learning, and working together in and around Bawating.
