Marie was incorporated as a City in 1912, although the rich history of the Sault dates back to the 1600's. With an ethnically diverse history, we take pride in our past - which is shown in our buildings, streets, landmarks, museums, and parks. Since the city's establishment, it has produced a number of leaders in business, science, sport, and arts. Our natural beauty speaks to the 75,000 residents

in the community, as well as the breathtaking landscapes in our area. Marie is privileged with various cultural institutions to appease the interests of any visitor or resident. Situated at the hub of the Great Lakes along the banks of the St. Marys River, our city is an international port of entry to the United States. We pride ourselves on the unique charm of the community and are known as being the 'Friendliest City in Algoma'. Marie is one of the most beautiful and exciting northern cities in Canada!

Exterior demolition of the former General Hospital begins tomorrow. Green Infrastructure Partners has completed its walkthrough/inspection, and work will start at the rear of the building after several months of interior prep work. This has certainly taken time, and I know residents have been eager to see visible progress. Tomorrow, that starts.

Anishnaabemowin Word of the Week 🗓️
This week’s word:

Sara Ndizhnikaaz (n-dizh-in-e-kaz)
Sara is my name

Aaniin, Boozhoo!

My name is Sara, and I am this year’s summer student in the Mayor’s and CAO’s offices. I am an Anishinaabekwe from Batchewana First Nation and am currently studying Indigenous Studies and Environmental Science at Western University.

I’m very grateful to be starting my first year with the City, and I’m especially excited to be taking over the Word of the Week series for the summer. I wanted to take a moment in my first post to share a little about myself so readers can get to know me before I begin sharing traditional Anishinaabemowin words and phrases.

I love being outside and can usually be found at my camp whenever I get the chance. The photo I’m sharing for this post was taken at my camp, which feels pretty fitting since it’s one of my favourite places to be. Hockey has also been a huge part of my life for as long as I can remember, and it’s something I’ve always been really passionate about. I also really enjoy trying new things and stepping out of my comfort zone, which is what made this opportunity so exciting for me.

Moving forward, I will be sharing a new Anishinaabemowin word or phrase each week. I am really looking forward to learning and sharing together over the course of the summer!

Miigwech!

Sault Loops Transit Update:

As with any major transit service change, a brief adjustment period is expected as riders get familiar with the new Sault Loops routes and schedules. The network was thoroughly tested before launch and is now being fine-tuned based on real-world service conditions and rider demand. Thank you for your patience and support during this transition.

We are aware that some riders have experienced issues with certain features in the AnyRide app. We are working closely with our service provider to identify and resolve these issues as soon as possible.

In the meantime, riders can continue to use the trip planning feature within the UMO app, as well as Google trip planning. Additionally, transit staff are on-site at the Transit Terminal and other key locations helping riders with route information, trip planning, and navigating the new system. Additional staff will remain available throughout the week to assist customers.

Community feedback has been a vital part of this project from the beginning, through the transit study, public engagement process, and now the implementation phase. Adjustments will be made where needed as the rollout continues.

Overall, the launch of the Sault Loops network has gone according to plan, and our team remains committed to providing a dependable, easy-to-use transit service for the community.
