Sometimes, the time we spend together may be short, but the connections made can leave a lasting impression!

It was an honour for the ISN Maskwa team to welcome and support Aroland First Nation during their time of need. While our time together was short, we were grateful for the opportunity to get to know their community, share some time together, and be there when support was needed most.

From the moment they arrived, their community showed just how strong, organized, and community-minded they are. It was truly a pleasure to work alongside such a great group of people. And most importantly, we were so happy to see them able to return home safely and quickly.

The ISN Maskwa team was back up north last week, in beautiful Fort Severn First Nation, to deliver Wildland Firefighter training!

It was an honour to get to travel into the community and spend time with an incredible group of participants who showed strong dedication, teamwork, and commitment throughout the training.

From classroom learning to hands-on practical exercises, participants worked hard to build new skills and confidence to help protect their community and support wildfire response efforts.

Congratulations to all of the graduates on your accomplishments! Your commitment to learning and serving your community is something to be extremely proud of.

When emergencies happen, First Nations communities deserve support that understands their unique needs, realities, and strengths.

Canada’s first Indigenous Emergency Operations Centre (IEOC) is operated by Missanabie Cree First Nation's ISN Maskwa. Located in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, on the traditional territory of the Anishinaabek, the IEOC provides 24/7 Indigenous-led emergency response and support to First Nations communities.

The IEOC can support communities during a range of emergencies, including:

🔹 Evacuations (Incl. floods, wildfires, infrastructure failures, etc.)
🔹In-Community Deployments (Incl. Social crisis, nursing stations, etc.)
🔹 Critical Incidents
🔹 Search and Rescue

Through partnerships with First Nations communities and funding partners, the IEOC works to provide coordinated, culturally informed, and Indigenous-led emergency support when it is needed most.

When a community contacts the IEOC Duty Officer (249-889-6870), they are connected directly with First Nation-led decision-makers and emergency response professionals who understand the importance of working alongside community Chief and Councils, staff, and community members.

Deployable teams include:

📋 Emergency Pre-Planning & Disaster Recovery Support

From preparedness and planning to emergency response and recovery, the IEOC is committed to standing alongside First Nations communities and supporting them through challenging times. At ISN Maskwa, our hearts are with every individual, family, and community affected by the wildfires raging across Northern Ontario.

We stand alongside our brothers and sisters, relatives, friends, colleagues, and partner communities during this incredibly difficult time. To the communities facing uncertainty, displacement, and the difficult decisions that come with protecting your people—we want you to know that you are not alone. We remain committed to supporting as many communities as we can and working together to help keep people safe.

We also recognize the tremendous responsibility carried by Chiefs and Councils as they make the heartbreaking decision to evacuate their communities. These decisions are never easy, and they are made with the safety and well-being of community members at the forefront.

Chii-miigwetch to the wildland firefighters, emergency responders, pilots, health care teams, community staff, leadership, volunteers, and everyone working tirelessly on the front lines. Your courage, dedication, and selfless service to protect lives, homes, and the lands we all cherish do not go unnoticed.

We also extend our gratitude to our partners and fellow organizations across the emergency management community who continue to work around the clock, coordinating evacuations, providing essential supports, and ensuring communities receive the care and resources they need during this challenging time.

In moments like these, we are reminded that our greatest strength is found in standing together—with compassion, resilience, and a shared commitment to caring for one another.

Last week, our ISN Maskwa team had the privilege of traveling to Fort Albany First Nation to deliver Wildland Firefighter Training in partnership with Mushkegowuk Council and Indigenous Services Canada.

Throughout the training, participants demonstrated commitment, resilience, and a strong willingness to build the skills needed to help protect their community. From classroom instruction to practical, hands-on field exercises, every participant embraced the opportunity to strengthen their wildfire response knowledge and emergency preparedness.

We extend our congratulations to everyone who successfully completed the training, you are truly an impressive group - Your dedication is helping build stronger, safer, and more resilient communities, while supporting local capacity to respond when wildfire threats arise!

As we mark Canada Day, we take time to reflect on the many stories, histories, and lived experiences that make up this land we call home.

This day is an opportunity to recognize the enduring strength, resilience, cultures, languages, and traditions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples who have cared for these lands and waters since time immemorial.

We honour the ancestors who came before us, the Elders and Knowledge Keepers who continue to guide us, and the generations who carry forward the teachings, stories, and connections that keep communities strong.

True reconciliation is built through relationships — through listening, learning, understanding, and walking together with respect.

Today, we celebrate the beauty of Turtle Island, the diversity of the people who call it home, and the continued journey toward stronger relationships, shared understanding, and a future rooted in respect.

ISN Maskwa would like to congratulate another one of our team members, Ethan Wilde, and his brother, who make up Brothers Wilde, as they had the opportunity to perform during the FIFA World Cup, ahead of the Netherlands vs. Sweden match, representing Kettle and Stony Point First Nation on stage with features on TSN and CTV!

Building Connections Across Turtle Island 🌿

Last week, Missanabie Cree Emergency Management Services (MCEMS) ventured out to British Columbia with the MCBC and ISN Maskwa Inc. leadership teams to meet with incredible community leaders.

The journey was filled with meaningful conversations, shared experiences, and opportunities to strengthen relationships with others who share a commitment to supporting First Nation communities across Turtle Island.

We are grateful for the connections made, the knowledge shared, and the inspiring discussions that continue to shape and strengthen the work we do.

As MCEMS, ISN Maskwa and MCBC continue to expand and develop, we remain committed to fostering strong relationships, creating new pathways for collaboration, and walking alongside communities with respect, humility, and purpose.
