SRC was pleased to welcome the Honourable Tim Hodgson, Minister of Energy and Natural Resources, and the Honourable Buckley Belanger, Secretary of State (Rural Development), for a tour of our Rare Earth Processing Facility earlier this week.

Building a secure, reliable rare earth supply chain here at home is critical to Canada’s economic and national security. SRC is proud to be advancing Canadian rare earth processing capacity right here in Saskatchewan.

How do you make a raisin dance? With a few simple ingredients, you can turn snack time into a science experiment!

Drop raisins into a glass of clear, carbonated liquid (like Sprite!) and watch what happens. Tiny carbon dioxide bubbles attach themselves to the wrinkly raisin skin and carry them toward the surface. When the bubbles pop, the raisins sink back down and the process starts all over again.

It's a simple way for young scientists to explore buoyancy, density and gases while seeing science in action; right at the kitchen table!

SRC is heading to Limerick, Ireland for MIXING18, the 18th European Conference on Mixing, taking place August 30 to September 2, 2026!

The conference brings together researchers, engineers and industry professionals from around the world to exchange knowledge and explore advancements in mixing technologies and more sustainable industrial processes.

SRC experts will contribute to the conversation with two presentations focused on the challenges and opportunities of working with concentrated suspensions and industrial slurries:

📋 Measurement of Just-Suspended Speed (Njs) for Concentrated Suspensions
📋 Progress on Measuring the Yield Stress of Non-Newtonian Slurries with Coarse Particles Using an Instrumented Mixing Setup

How do you separate valuable minerals from waste rock? Sometimes, it comes down to density.

Dense Media Separation, or DMS, uses differences in particle density to separate valuable ore from waste material before it moves further through the mineral processing stage.

Removing waste earlier means there's less material that needs to be transported, crushed and processed later. When used in the right application, that can help reduce energy use, water demand and processing costs.

At SRC, our experts use DMS to separate ore at multiple scales to help determine how it could perform under real-world operating conditions.

After a wet start to summer, July brought the heat to Saskatchewan.

SRC’s Climate Reference Station (CRS) in Saskatoon logged 23 days with temperatures above25 degrees Celsius. Although the rain tapered off in July, the month did see significant rainfall on July 9 with 25 mm of precipitation recorded.

The CRS at the Conservation Learning Centre (CLC) near Prince Albert recorded similar trends but logged a lot more rain. The CRS at the CLC recorded 98mm of precipitation for the month, including significant rainfall on July 11 that measured 40mm!

Bring a little summer weather science indoors and create your own tornado in a bottle!

Using a few simple items from around the house, you can watch a vortex form right in front of your very eyes and explore some of the science behind one of summer's most powerful weather phenomena.

Try experimenting with more or less water, different bottle sizes or even a little food colouring to see what changes!

For nearly 80 years, innovation at SRC has meant more than advancing technology, it’s meant helping Saskatchewan industries grow, compete and turn ambitious ideas into real-world solutions.

What began as a small provincial research organization in 1947 has grown into Canada's second-largest research and technology organization, supporting more than 1,400 clients worldwide.

Today, that work spans mining, energy and the environment; from advancing critical mineral technologies and developing resilient energy solutions to supporting environmental remediation and climate resilience.

The impact is felt here at home. In 2024-25 alone, SRC contributed $565 million in direct economic impact and supported nearly 1,450 jobs, delivering $28 in economic return for every dollar invested by the provincial government.

As we approach eight decades, the mission continues: help Saskatchewan innovate, strengthen its industries and create new opportunities for the future.
