Feature Friday 🥰
👋 Role: Club and Camp Coordinator
🕒 With CLASI since: June 2021
💬 Q&A with: Sarah Killen
Q: What inspired you to join CLASI?
A: My best friend, Madison, had been working with CLASI for a few years and encouraged me to apply! Her brother, Ryland, has a neuro-developmental disorder; growing up together, I saw her family navigate the devastating lack of necessary supports and wanted to be a part of positive change within the field.
Q: What do you enjoy most about your job?
A: The connections. Connection to my community and having opportunities to engage positively with the various amazing businesses in Saskatoon that strive to be accessible. Connection to the individuals we support and their families, of which I’ve come to feel a part of after many years of continual interaction and care. Connection to a group of likeminded individuals that I work alongside, providing me a safe space to debrief on the triumphs and challenges of the sometimes difficult job we’ve all fallen in love with.
Q: What’s something people might be surprised to learn about you?
A: I can speak a small amount of German and ASL! In University, I studied abroad in Germany for a summer and just recently took three ASL courses with two CLASI coworker’s 🤟🏼
Q: What’s your favorite way to spend your free time?
A: Free time? What’s that?! I love to work… my full-time job is as a Social Worker with Mobile Crisis Service, I do casual social work at JPCH, a bit of personal respite, and coordinate CLASI clubs and camps! Once everything is settled, I like to relax with my dog, Rex, and cat, Remy, while watching anything horror-related!
Q: Coffee or tea? Early bird or night owl?
A: Coffee all the way - I am a huge night owl! You won’t find me awake earlier than 12pm unless it’s against my will.
Q: What does inclusion/community/support mean to you?
A: To me, inclusion means having your emotional, physical, and social needs met without hesitation or request. All individuals should have the opportunity for recreation, connection, and adventure without fear of physical or social barriers.
Q: What is your favorite quote?
A: “If you don’t laugh you’ll cry!”
