We'd like to wish a very happy 60th (yes, you read that right) birthday to the Frances Morrison Central Library! 🎉🎂

The library had its grand opening at 8:30 pm six decades ago during a ceremony that attracted overflowing crowds, as noted in this StarPhoenix article: https://tinyurl.com/ydtfb342

As we get ready to usher in the next half-century-plus of library services in Saskatoon with the opening of our new central library next year, we wanted to take this opportunity to look back and post some days-gone-by photos of the Frances Morrison Central Library — a critical learning, entertainment and memory institution that has served our community so well, for so long.

Photo 1: A little girl, books in hand, prepares to open the door to Pooh Corner (1966).

Photo 2: Construction of the Frances Morrison Library (Nov, 1965).

Photo 3: Portrait of Frances Morrison in front of the main doors a few years after the library was renamed in her honour (1983).

Photo 4: Mayor E.J. Cole filling in an application for a borrower's card on opening day at the new main library in 1966. Librarian Frances Morrison prepares to sign out the first book for him ... little did she know at the time, the library would later be named in her honour!

Photo 5: The 7th International Square and Round Dance Festival moved to the outdoors with a pancake breakfast and street dance in front of the Frances Morrison Library (1966).

Photo 6: Three pre-schoolers absorbed in their books in a quiet corner of Christopher Robin Room (1982).

Photo 7: Microfiche was the bridge between catalogue cards and computers. Here, two youngsters check out the microfiche readers in Fine & Performing Arts Department (1982).

Photo 8: Gary Tisdale has the rapt attention of little ones during story hour in Pooh Corner (1988).

Photo 9: Patrons in the Information Services department at Frances Morrison Library (1982).

Photo 10: Spring time photo (colored) showing City Hall tulips in bloom with the Frances Morrison Library in the background (1967).

If you work in occupational health and safety, you might want to sit this out. This photo from July 15, 1932, shows workers perched atop arch no. 5 during construction of the Broadway Bridge near the east bank of the river ... clear evidence that, during this period, "fall protection” mostly meant “try not to.” 😳
