During Correctional Services Staff Recognition Week (May 4–10), we join in recognizing the dedication, professionalism, and resilience of correctional workers across our province.

This is work that demands strength, accountability, and a deep commitment to public safety—often in challenging and high-pressure environments.

As we recognize staff this week, we also take time to reflect.

On Thursday, correctional staff from across Ontario will gather at Queen’s Park for the Ceremony of Remembrance to honour those who have lost their lives in the line of duty. Their sacrifice will never be forgotten.

We encourage all members to take a moment this week to support one another and acknowledge the important work being done every day.

Correctional Services Staff Recognition Week (May 4–10)
This week, we recognize the correctional workers who show up every day in some of the most challenging conditions imaginable.
Your work requires strength, resilience, and professionalism—often without the recognition it deserves. You maintain safety, support rehabilitation, and carry the weight of a system that demands more than it gives back.
We see you. We stand with you. And we thank you.
Take a moment this week to acknowledge a colleague, check in on one another, and remember—you’re not alone in this work.

🎯 Axe Throwing Fundraiser – In Support of Boots on the Ground - Peer Support for First Responders🎯

What a night.

Thanks to the incredible support from our members, friends, and the community, last night’s axe throwing tournament raised $1,826 for Boots on the Ground.

Boots on the Ground provides anonymous peer support for first responders, by first responders, and we’re proud to support an organization that truly looks after our own.

A huge thank you to:
• Everyone who registered a team and came out to throw
• The volunteers who helped keep things running smoothly
• Valley Axe Sarnia for hosting us and taking great care of the group
• Everyone who purchased door prize tickets — every ticket helped grow the total

We also want to sincerely thank the local businesses who generously donated door prizes to help us raise even more funds. Your support made a real difference.

👇 Please join us in thanking and supporting the following businesses:
• Imperial City Brew House
• Two Water Brewing Co.
• Canadian Made Supplements
• The Book Keeper
• The Water Bug Health Food Store
• Kernals in Lambton Mall
• DeGroot's Nurseries
• Boulevard Grill
• Alternate Grounds Cafe & Dockside
• Christo's
• Box & Boards by Hendu (www.facebook.com/don.henderson.79)
• OPSEU Region 1

And congratulations to the winning team — made up of three Sarnia Firefighters, Platoon A and one Corrections Officer… which sounds like the start of a bad joke, but somehow worked out pretty well.

On behalf of OPSEU Local 128, thank you to everyone who helped make this event such a success. We appreciate the support and the strong turnout for a great cause

We’d like to share this peer support opportunity for spouses and family members of first responders.

“Guardian Wings” offers a safe, confidential space focused on connection, understanding, and support for families affected by this work. These kinds of resources are important and often overlooked.

Please consider sharing with your spouse, family members, or anyone who may benefit.

I have wanted to launch a family/spouse peer support group (specific to first responders) for years. As a spouse of a first responder I know the effects that the role can have on the responder as well as the family unit. As a clinician I also see how this shows up in sessions in many different ways. I believe that the family unit is a crucial component to wellness on the job and is often overlooked.

GUARDIAN WINGS was designed to be a safe and confidential space for spouses and friends/family to come to find community, connection and understanding. It will be an informal group that is peer led, with some psycho-education woven within.

Please join me on Thursday February 19,2026 from 7 pm - 8 pm at located at 105 Mitton Street South beside

This is a FREE offering with no commitment to future groups. Although not mandatory I would greatly appreciate you registering if you plan to come. There will be light refreshments available.

I hope to see you there! Please forward to those who you feel might benefit from this support.

Also a special thank you to Melodie, owner of my favourite crystal shop who graciously donated this beautiful space for the evening. 🩵. It truly takes a village when it comes to support and I am so grateful to those who believe in my visions.

Ontario’s correctional staff are facing a mental-health crisis across the entire province. Understaffing, growing trauma, and unsafe working conditions aren’t limited to one region — every provincial jail is under pressure.

CBC News recently covered the situation in Northern Ontario. The concerns they highlighted are the same ones frontline staff are experiencing everywhere: increased violence, crushing workloads, and not enough support for the people who keep these facilities running.

This isn’t a Northern issue. It’s an Ontario issue.

If you’re interested in understanding the reality correctional officers are living with, search this headline on CBC News:

“Northern Ontario jail staff raise alarms over pay gaps, contract hiring and mental health”

The more people know, the harder it is to ignore.

Our bargaining team was back at the table today — and the Employer is still ignoring the crisis in Corrections.

🔴 Violence at record highs: 3 staff assaults province-wide every day in 2025 — a 445% increase since 2012.
🔴 Retention collapsing: 1 in 5 new officers quit within a year.
🔴 Mental health neglected: we need real investments in benefits and supports to deal with the trauma we face.

These aren’t just “bargaining points” — they’re our daily reality, and they impact public safety across Ontario.

Today at Sarnia Jail, we stood together with a BBQ, placards, and solidarity to show our team at the table that we have their backs. 👊

Enough is enough. Corrections workers deserve real solutions, not more concessions.

LockTalk #16 reminds us: every member matters in this fight. That’s why all acting managers must return to their bargaining unit roles by Sept 15.

It takes ALL of us standing together to force real change.

🗝 LockTalk #16 is out 🗝

The Correctional Bargaining Team is calling on ALL members in acting management positions to return to their bargaining unit roles by September 15th.
This includes day-to-day acting positions.

We are short-staffed, under-resourced, and facing record inmate counts, caseloads, and workplace violence. Enough is enough. It’s time to stand together and demand the Employer address these critical issues at the bargaining table.

📌 Read the full directive in LockTalk #16.
