Today we celebrate Labour Day!

It isn’t just the last long weekend of summer, it is an opportunity to reflect on the importance of the labour movement, labour rights, and of the workers that keep our society moving and thriving. From clerks to road crews; water system operators to bus drivers; by-law enforcement to forestry; and everything in between, our workers keep our community moving into the future.

So, as we mark this important day, we’d like to thank all our employees, from CUPE 153, CUPE 2713, CUPE 3690, the Sarnia Professional Fire Fighters Association, and Unifor Local 914, who dedicate their work to improving and maintaining our community.

Zone 2 Yard Waste Collection occurs this week (September 7 to 11).

Yard waste will be collected at the curb on alternating weeks based on zone until the week of December 7. Yard waste will be collected from properties on the same weeks and days as recycling.

A few reminders:
👍Place yard waste in a paper bag or open container marked with an X on two sides on your regular collection day
👍Leaves; grass or sod with dirt removed; house plants without trunks; unpainted pumpkins; weeds; hay; and straw accepted
👍No more than 22 kg per container/bag
🚫Yard waste in plastic bags not collected
🚫Stumps, wood, brush, mulch, root balls, ferns not collected (don't mix brush with yard waste)

Environment Canada has issued a yellow level severe thunderstorm watch for Sarnia for the afternoon and into the evening of September 2, 2026, with the possibility of damaging wind gusts, large hail, heavy rain and possible risk of a tornado.

To accommodate Labour Day on Monday, September 7, 2026 there will be impacts to several City facilities and services.

The following City facilities will be closed on Monday, September 7:
👉City Hall
👉The Strangway Centre
👉The Sarnia Compost Site
👉Sarnia Transit Offices

Sarnia Transit buses will not be in service on Monday, September 7

Waste, yard waste, and recycling collections will not be impacted.

During the holiday closure residents are asked to reach out only in instances of immediate concern such as watermain breaks, animals at large, and dangerous downed trees. Please call 519-332-0330 and follow the prompts.

For questions regarding waste collection please call Marcotte at 519-339-9988 for garbage, and Emterra at 519-312-8579 for recycling.
