The Councils of Victoria and Salmon Cove met on Aug 31, 2026 to discuss areas of mutual interest. We have committed to working together for our mutual benefit and to lobby government as a group to enhance our chances of securing grants and funding.

We have identified upgrades to the Old Salmon Cove Road, and an expansion of the mutual aid agreements between our Fire Departments as areas where we can support each other. We also discussed the recent algae bloom and its impacts upon our towns. We feel working with the SAEN to address factors that prohibit salmon from migrating upstream, will also help
mitigate low flow of water in Forest Pond and the conditions that lead to algae blooms.

We feel that the meeting was very productive and have committed to meeting on a quarterly
basis.

So glad to see our Fire Dept. on this list. These funds will help offset the cost of equipment that was lost during the Kingston Fire last year.

$300K+ TO FIRE DEPARTMENTS AFTER KINGSTON WILDFIRES
(Aug. 29)

The Provincial Government is providing nearly $308,000 to 23 fire departments that lost or damaged equipment while responding to the 2025 Kingston-area wildfires.

The funding will help cover damaged or lost equipment and fuel costs incurred by departments that travelled from across Newfoundland and Labrador to assist during the fires.

Bay de Verde Fire Department will receive the largest amount at $105,659.50, including $100,000 toward a response vehicle.

Other departments receiving funding include:

• Heart’s Delight-Islington - $17,648.47
• Grand Falls-Windsor - $14,181.39

• Hant’s Harbour - $10,101.63
• Old Perlican - $5,345
• Gambo - $5,140.96
• Witless Bay - $4,925
• Trinity Bay North - $4,524.97
• Torbay - $4,050.87
• Winterton - $4,043.40
• Victoria - $3,966.54
• Carbonear - $3,314.63
• Conception Bay South - $2,850
• Bay Roberts - $2,147.68
• Pouch Cove - $1,679.40
• Portugal Cove-St. Philip’s - $992.75
• Heart’s Content - $800

Forestry, Agriculture and Lands Minister Pleaman Forsey said the support shown by fire departments during last summer’s wildfires demonstrated the “generosity and community spirit” of firefighters across the province.

Budget 2026 also includes more than $7 million to support volunteer fire departments through equipment, supplies and training.
