A March 2026 Communications Earth & Environment study highlights beavers as powerful "ecosystem engineers" capable of transforming streams into carbon sinks by slowing water and expanding wetlands. Researchers found that this natural engineering can significantly offset carbon emissions, with study authors highlighting beavers as key contributors to nature-based climate solutions alongside other wildlife like earthworms and caddisfly larvae. Read more about the study in USA TODAY.

We are so glad the beavers are back on the foreshore. We may even be lucky enough to see one from the new Eric Christmas Memorial Walkway.

Just a reminder so we don’t forget in our excitement about the new boardwalk. There are restrictions on when dogs are allowed on the trail and they must be under control while you’re walking the foreshore. Please keep them on a 6 foot leash and do not let them chase the birds. Dogs are not allowed on the Foreshore Trail during nesting season, which is May 1 to June 30.

The last bolt went into the Eric Christmas Memorial Boardwalk and Wildlife viewing platform on Thursday, April 9th around 4:30. Thanks to Quinton Lindgren and a few of the SABNES' Board Members and their spouses ,the Memorial Benches were placed and bolted in place.

The lake levels are starting to rise so there was mud and a few inches of water underneath the platform. So one lucky 'volunteer', Gerry drew the short straw and bolted the benches from under the deck. The rest carried benches, and helped place them while Quinton drilled holes for the bolts. Two of the benches have small tables in front of them.

The donors of the benches have waited patiently for this to happen for a number of years! The benches look beautiful and will be there for others to enjoy for years. As the reeds green up and the water rises the view will only get better.

We have received many kind words of appreciation but the biggest joy is watching those enjoying it. It is totally accessible for wheelchairs and strollers so please come take a look and sit awhile.

Another bonus, the Western Grebes are back! You will likely hear them as you wander along the foreshore trail in Salmon Arm. Do enjoy!!

We are on the final lap! We just need to install the Memorial Benches and build a large 14 foot bench for the platform. This happen in April. The Eric Christmas Memorial Boardwalk and Wildlife Viewing Platform is nearing completion. The crew from the Shuswap Trail Alliance will be out there today doing some final tweaks on the Railings. Some of the SABNES Board had a tour last evening. It is impressive! We extend our sincere thanks to Jen Bellhouse, and the trail building crew for their hard work.

The Boardwalk is coming along thanks to the hard work of the crew from the Shuswap Trail Alliance and the continued work of the SABNES Directors. The hog wire and railing is now being installed. It was such a lovely day for a walk along the foreshore! The photos show what has been done and what is left to do. It is going to be amazing!! 'Our' Biologist with SABNES and another 'birder' /Naturalist helped with methodical bird nest sweep on the weekend to ensure that there was no nesting activity "at the time". The beaver were out today, as well.

Two gifts for all of us to enjoy year round!

1. The beaver are back on the foreshore and have been adding to their lodge. They didn't seem to bothered by the building of the Eric Christmas Boardwalk and Wildlife Viewing Platform beside their lodge.
2. And a present we can all enjoy for many years to come ...once it is completed with railings early in the New Year. Eric Christmas Boardwalk and Wildlife Viewing Platform is nearing completion!!!
