LABOUR DAY - Celebrating Canadian Workers!
"Labour Day, the first Monday in September, has been a statutory holiday in Canada since 1894. It originated in the first workers’ rallies of the Victorian era. Historically, workers marked the day with various activities. These included parades, speeches, games, amateur competitions and picnics. While we mourn her loss, we also share our gratitude for all that Dolly did to promote literacy, putting books in the hands of millions of children across Canada.

In 2006, Dolly Parton's Imagination Library expanded into Canada and offers free, high quality, age appropriate books to registered children.

DID YOU KNOW the St. Louis Branch Wapiti Public Library is now 75 years young? The first public library opened in St. Louis on August 14, 1951 in Daniel's General Store with Miss Antoinette Daniel serving as the first volunteer librarian.

In 1953 the community received library services from the travelling "Bookmobile". In December of that same year, the library was moved to Tremblay's Locker Plant, where Miss Lucie Tremblay took over as volunteer librarian.

In May 1956 the library was once again on the move to the St. Louis Hotel Lobby where Mrs. Jack Nelson took over the librarian duties. The St. Louis Branch Wapiti Public Library is now located in the St. Louis Public School, sharing library space in the school since September 1992.

The board & staff of the St. Louis Branch Wapiti Public Library would like to offer our condolences to Lucy (Boutin) Tessier on the recent passing of her husband Alfred (Fred) Tessier. Lucy served as the librarian for many years at the St. Louis Public School and as branch librarian & then sub at the St. Louis Branch Wapiti Public Library. Lucy and the Tessier/Boutin families are in our thoughts & prayers during this difficult time.
