Plovers are back and breeding in the park!

Piping Plovers have made it back from winter migration, which can be as far away as Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean!

This is an important time for these small, endangered shorebirds as they establish territories and mate.

Some of the ways males attract females is with pebble-tossing, forming depressions in the sand as a future nest site, tilting their body, spreading their wings, and fanning their tail in front of the female. They also do a flight display, tipping side to side in the air.

Please note that the following closures are in effect until August 30:

Pointe Sapin Dune: Closed
Portage River Dune: Closed
North Kouchibouguac Dune: Closed
South Kouchibouguac Dune: North and south tips closed
North Richibucto Dune: North tip closed

Stay tuned for updates on plover activity throughout the season!

Whether you come to learn, connect, celebrate, or simply be part of the gathering, all are welcome!!

💧 Help protect Kouchibouguac’s waterways 💧

Aquatic invasive species, like zebra mussels, can spread from one waterbody to another by hitching a ride on boats, kayaks, canoes, fishing gear, and footwear.

Zebra mussels have been detected in New Brunswick waters, making prevention more important than ever.

Before moving between lakes, rivers, streams, or coastal waters, remember to:

🪣 CLEAN mud, plants, and debris from boats, paddles, trailers, footwear, and gear. If possible, rinse with hot water.

🚰 DRAIN all water from boats, motors, bilges, live wells, and equipment.

🧽 DRY everything completely before using it in another waterbody.

✅ A few extra minutes can help prevent the spread of invasive species.

✅ The actions you take today help protect Kouchibouguac’s waters, wildlife, and ecosystems for future generations.

Thank you for doing your part. 💙

Black bears are active in Kouchibouguac this time of year, and visitors may spot them along the parkway or in other areas of the park — including mothers with cubs.

Keep pets on leash at all times and secure all food and garbage items.

In spring, bears are often feeding on fresh vegetation and insects, which can bring them near roadsides and open areas.

🚫 Do not approach or feed bears. Feeding or enticing wildlife is strictly prohibited in Parks Canada places and can lead to dangerous encounters.

If you see a bear, slow down, give it plenty of space, and enjoy the sighting from a safe distance.
