Plovers are back and breeding in the park!
Piping Plovers have made it back from winter migration, which can be as far away as Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean!
This is an important time for these small, endangered shorebirds as they establish territories and mate.
Some of the ways males attract females is with pebble-tossing, forming depressions in the sand as a future nest site, tilting their body, spreading their wings, and fanning their tail in front of the female. They also do a flight display, tipping side to side in the air.
Please note that the following closures are in effect until August 30:
Pointe Sapin Dune: Closed
Portage River Dune: Closed
North Kouchibouguac Dune: Closed
South Kouchibouguac Dune: North and south tips closed
North Richibucto Dune: North tip closed
Stay tuned for updates on plover activity throughout the season!
