We are very pleased to announce that Michael Saunders is our candidate for Saint John Portland-Simonds this election. We look forward to speaking with everyone in the riding who want real change in the Legislature!

We would like to introduce you to Michael Saunders. He's a well known face in Saint John. He's lived and worked (CUPE local 18, retired) in the North End most of his life and has been a member of service clubs and still volunteers in his church's kitchen, raising money for outreach programs for years.

Although Education, Health Care and Homelessness are all concerns of his, he wants to start a dialogue about changing our electoral system. Our current first-past-the-post system just swings us back and forth between the Liberals and the Conservatives - and no real change ever happens for your average New Brunswicker. And he has seen the need for change for far too long.

The NDP is deeply saddened to learn of the loss of two members of the Saint John community in another tragic encampment fire. Tragedies like this are becoming all too common in our province, due to a lack of affordable housing. Every New Brunswicker has a right to have a place to call home: Therefore, the NDP adds our voice to call on Minister Jill Green to immediately reinstate the Rent Cap. Urgent action is needed to address the skyrocketing cost of rent in our province. We can and must do better to prevent another tragic loss of life.

All New Democrats and our Leader Alex White's thoughts are with the family and friends of those who perished, and with all those who are being affected by a lack of open, accepting, affordable housing.

The New Brunswick NDP stands in solidarity with all unionized workers in the province, and joins the calls for Bill 17 to be voted down. Bill 17 is an attack on all workers in the province.
