Today, we take a closer look at a local memorial for the Regiments sacrifices during world War 2. Many who drive passed Lake street Armoury may see “Press On” - a late‑production M5A1 Stuart tank that served in the European theatre. Originally with the British Columbia Regiment, it was disabled by a mine in Holland in February 1945 and later recovered and given new life by the Pioneer Platoon under Sgt Roy Johnson.
The turret was removed and the vehicle converted into a command and reconnaissance tank for Lt‑Col Rowan Coleman, whose favourite expression gave the tank its nickname. After the war, the Lincoln and Welland Regiment selected the tank as a souvenir when it arrived back in Canada in March 1946.
In June 1994 Press On was relocated to it’s current position in front of Lake Street Armoury and is symbolic of the Regiment’s service & sacrifices in WW2.
Aujourd'hui, nous nous intéressons de plus près à un monument commémoratif local dédié aux sacrifices du Régiment durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Nombreux sont ceux qui, en passant devant le manège militaire de Lake Street, aperçoivent « Press On », un char M5A1 Stuart de fin de production ayant servi sur le théâtre d'opérations européen. Appartenant initialement au British Columbia Regiment, il fut mis hors de combat par une mine aux Pays-Bas en février 1945, puis récupéré et remis en état par le Pioneer Platoon du sergent Roy Johnson.
La tourelle fut démontée et le véhicule transformé en char de commandement et de reconnaissance pour le lieutenant-colonel Rowan Coleman, dont l'expression favorite lui valut son surnom. Après la guerre, le Lincoln and Welland Regiment choisit le char comme souvenir à son retour au Canada en mars 1946.
En juin 1994, « Press On » fut déplacé à son emplacement actuel devant le manège militaire de Lake Street et symbolise le service et les sacrifices du Régiment durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale.
