On this day...
NOVEMBER 16th 1882.
For sometime past a number of boys have been in the habit, on Sundays, of climbing on a shed in the rear of Ganong Bros Candy Factory and abstracting sweets through a window which is generally left unfastened, and which can be easily reached from the roof of the shed.
The youthful depredators were discovered on Sunday last, and on Monday one of their number was placed in the Gaol as a punishment for his misdemeanour.
He was released shortly afterwards, and its hoped that the discovery and consequent punishment will have the effect of preventing a recurrence of similar acts.
If not, it will be necessary to adopt a harsher remedy.

On this day..
ESCAPE 16 November 1830.
The 2 prisoners who have been confined for some time past, in the Gaol at St Andrews, under the sentence of death, and who where to HANG on the 23rd of this month, broke Gaol and have escaped.
Strong suspicions are enterained of their having had the assistance of accomplices, but as a proper investigation of the business will no doubt take place, it is unnecessary for us to be more explicit.
A reward of 10 Pounds has been offered by the under Sheriff of Charlotte County, for apprehending and lodging the felons in His Majesty's Gaol at St Andrews, or 20 Pounds for the apprehension of either one of them.
One is described as being about 24 years of age, 5 feet & 5 inches in height, stout made, full face, thick lips and light hair, and had on when he escaped, a dark green jacket, light waistcoat and dark coloured pantaloons.
The other is described is about 5 feet & 8 inches in height, smooth pale face, right eye weak and had on when he escaped a Blue jacket, black felt hat and green flushing trousers.

It could be the opening scene of a horror movie. A young archivist ventures into the dark basement of the museum library and stumbles across a stained and tattered book covered with symbols of death.

Late breaking news Aug 23 1888.
When Cows instead of Deer Roamed the Streets of St. Andrews
As reported in the Pilot Newspaper.

Aug 23/1888
Cows at Large
To those of our citizens who have within the past week observed the work being done by the Land Co., upon the public park at Indian Point, it must have occurred that a stage of progress has been reached where the roaming cow can in one day undo the labor of two men. The banks of the pond are being formed, the fancy pieces jutting out into the water graded and lined up, and to the gentlemen whose money is being spent upon what is designed to be the most attractive spot in our midst it is to say the least rather discouraging to find that they must day after day make good what has been trampled and torn down by cows. Furthermore it must be apparent to every man and woman that the genus cow meandering over the gravelled road and sidewalks of the park, creating nuisances every few yards, is scarcely in keeping with a public pleasure ground or private park.

It is no answer to the above truism to say the “fences would keep them out.” Fences and parks went together 20 years ago, but in the more modern landscape gardening the combination of green sward, flower-bed, driving road, and pedestrians path is not marred by dividing fences.

We feel confident that it is only necessary to appeal to good judgment of our citizens to put a stop to this annoyance, for it will add to the cleanliness of our town and remove an unsightly nuisance which residents and visitors take occasion to openly complain of.
