Flags at the Municipal Hall and Central Saanich Police Service have been lowered to half-mast following the tragic line-of-duty deaths of Toronto Police Constable Marc Pinizzotto today and Ontario Provincial Police Constable Tarun Bali earlier this week.

Our thoughts are with their families and the extended policing community in Ontario.

It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that CSPS mourns the loss of Toronto Police Service Constable Marc Pinizzotto, who was tragically killed in the line of duty this morning. We extend our deepest, most heartfelt condolences to Constable Pinizzotto's grieving family, his friends and loved ones, and the entire Toronto Police Service family.

This devastating loss comes just days after the line of duty death of Constable Tarun Bali of the Ontario Provincial Police. It marks an incredibly heavy, somber time for all police services and first responders across the province as they process this unimaginable grief. We will never forget their courage, their dedication, or the ultimate sacrifices they made to protect our communities.

🚸 This summer, look for *new* speed limit signs within Central Saanich's residential neighbourhoods! Why slower is safer:

🏥 Collisions at 30 km/h have a 90% pedestrian survival rate, compared to a less than 50% chance of survival at 50 km/h.

👀 Lower speeds give road users more reaction time and shorter stopping distances, helping prevent crashes.

🛻 Doubling your speed, like from 30 km/h to 60 km/h, quadruples the energy of a crash, making collisions much more severe.

🏘️ Slower speeds help create quieter, more livable neighbourhoods for everyone—including dog walkers, kids going to school, older adults and families with strollers.

What's changing?
🚗 The speed limit is now 40 km/h on Stelly’s Cross Road between Wallace Drive and East Saanich Road. This change responds to a history of collisions and increased safety concerns in this busy residential area with school bus stops.
🚙 By the end of 2026, the default speed limit is set to be 30 km/h for most residential streets within neighbourhoods. New signage is rolling out neighbourhood-by-neighbourhood. Enforcement begins after updated signs are installed.

❔ What is a residential street? ❔
Compared to collector or arterial roads, residential streets mainly provide access to homes and typically have lower traffic volumes at lower speeds.
