RMES actively works with the River Forecasting Centre to understand local rainfall impacts and is always ready to activate our emergency management plan.

As you sip on your Saturday morning coffee, here are some things to keep in mind as a significant rainfall event is forecasted for our response area over the next few days:

☔️Check submersible (sump) pumps to ensure floats are in proper working order.

☔️Make sure to vent external pumps away from home air intakes to prevent carbon monoxide poisoning.

☔️In the event of power outages, keep flashlights handy. Never use a stovetop to heat your home during a power outage.

☔️Make sure down spouts are directed away from your home and towards proper spillways.

☔️Avoid river banks. They may look safe but have potential to be unstable due to saturation from heavy rains and higher river flows.

☔️Avoid boating, floating or swimming (including not wading your dogs) in local waterways.

☔️Be vigilant when driving in heavy rain. Water pooling on highways can cause poor visibility and hydroplaning.

Check on your neighbours and stay safe!

May is Motorcycle Safety Month, according to the Alberta Traffic Safety calendar. Motorcycles are smaller than other vehicles, which can make them harder to see on roadways and in parking lots. Staying safe starts with staying visible.

Motorcycle visibility tips:

• Wear reflective tape on your motorcycle, especially on wheel rims and areas closest to light sources. At night, this helps your bike stand out like a larger vehicle.

• Wear bright, high-visibility gear such as orange, yellow, or white to increase your visibility to other road users.

• Ride a brightly colored motorcycle when possible, as darker colors are harder to see.

• Avoid lingering in blind spots. Position yourself where you are clearly visible to other drivers at all times.

• Use your brakes as a signal if needed; a light tap can help alert drivers behind you to your presence.

Welcome to "Firehall History Friday"! As we continue our efforts to after a devastating back hall fire in December and cover the $1.5 million shortfall to replace infrastructure, vehicles and equipment, we're sharing more about Redwood Meadows Emergency Servicesly nearly 50-year history.

Construction of Redwood Meadows began in 1977. After the first house fire in 1978, there was interest in staffing a volunteer fire department. The development lease provided the first fire truck: a 1962 Thibault LaFrance AWIT with an 840 gallon pump that carried 600 gallons of water. The vehicle came from North Vancouver was refurbished by Superior Fire Services in Red Deer.

In the back hall fire, we lost 120 Engine, worth $300,000 when it was purchased in 2009 and a similar vehicle now costs $1-1.5 million. This critical piece of equipment is a key focus of the fundraising efforts.

Areas around our response area have implemented high streamflow advisories for the Bow River.

Thanks to warming temperatures and snowmelt, water levels are rising on the Elbow River with an additional lift expected through the weekend.

Use extreme caution near the river and stay off embankments. If you are near the river, be aware that stream flows can be fast-moving and dangerous; people or pets can be easily pulled into water and carried away.

The water is moving fast, it’s cold, and has increased debris that poses a significant safety risk.

Rescues in these conditions are extremely dangerous for first responders. Please don’t be the reason others are put at risk. Fill up a kiddie pool and cool down from the heat safely!

Hello, AC season. Before you cool down, make sure your air conditioner is set up safely. Plug window air conditioners directly into a wall outlet.

Many manufacturers do not allow extension cords. If they are allowed, use the proper type and follow the manufacturer’s instructions.
