🦌✨ Spotting caribou is a breathtaking experience but it’s important to do so safely, for both you and the caribou! 🌲💚

📏 Always give caribou plenty of space. Getting too close can stress them and put you at risk. ⚠️

🔭 Keep your distance by using binoculars, a zoom lens, or our Caribou View Finders located at popular viewing spots. 👀 These view finders are a safe and respectful way to enjoy a close-up look without disturbing the animals. 🦌🌿

🚫 Never approach, feed, or follow caribou. Let them move freely in their natural habitat. 🌲🦌

🌳 Another tree planting season has come to a close in Gros Morne National Park! 🌳

Over the past two weeks, 200,000 native seedlings were added to the landscape, including balsam fir, black spruce, white spruce and tamarack (also known as larch or juniper). Each tree was carefully planted by a hardworking crew of professionals who know how to give young forests their best start. 🌱

These restoration efforts focus on areas where past over browsing by moose left the forest struggling to recover. With moose populations now carefully managed, these seedlings can grow strong and healthy, building the foundation of tomorrow’s forest. Over their lifetimes these trees will also remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere as a nature-based solution to climate change. 🌲 🌞

Curious about how the young trees are doing? Surveys of thousands of seedlings planted in previous years show that they are thriving, with excellent survival rates and little to no damage from moose, snowshoe hares, or spruce budworm. 🫎 🐰 🐛

🎣🐟 Reminder for anglers in Gros Morne National Park! 🏞️🌲

The salmon and trout fishing season in Gros Morne closes on Monday, September 7, which means this is the last weekend to cast your line in the park. 🎣

If you’re planning one more trip to the river, please make sure you:
🎫 Have your Parks Canada fishing permit.
📋 Review the regulations for size limits and permitted areas.
🌿 Practice safe and responsible fishing to help protect these important species.

The 3rd Annual Meteor Madness 🌟 at Shallow Bay offered a celebration of everything celestial during the fantastic Perseid Meteor Shower! 🔭

🌤️ Participants were kept busy during the day making their own homemade comets, bat plushies, meteor toutons and eclipse cookies along with getting dark-sky themed airbrush tattoos, learning about light pollution, and experiencing Mighty Perseus and the Wheel of Wonder. 🎡

In the evening, they enjoyed singing and acting under the stars along with a bat chat. Despite late-night clouds, the beautiful first quarter moon appeared to end the wonderful gathering. 🌙

😊 Many thanks to NL Health Services- Western Zone and the Town of Cow Head for their continued support in this annual Dark Sky event. 🌌

🦇🌙 Tonight is International Bat Night!

Did you know bats are the only mammals capable of true flight? These amazing nocturnal animals navigate the night using echolocation, sending out high-frequency sounds that bounce off trees, insects, and other objects to help them "see" in the dark.

Here in Gros Morne National Park, we're home to three bat species:
🦇 Little Brown Bat
🦇 Northern Long-eared Bat
🦇 Hoary Bat

The Hoary Bat, Canada's largest bat, migrates south for the winter, while the two smaller species stay closer to home and hibernate. All three are insect-eating specialists, helping keep insect populations in balance. 🦟

Parks Canada researchers use special acoustic recorders to detect bat calls that are beyond the range of human hearing, helping us better understand where bats live and how they're doing.

Sadly, the Little Brown Bat and Northern Long-eared Bat are endangered in Canada due to White-nose Syndrome, a fungal disease that has caused devastating population declines.

Like all mammals, bats can also carry rabies, although this is rare. In Newfoundland and Labrador, there have been two confirmed cases of rabies in bats: one in Cartwright in 2004 and another earlier this year in the Trinity Bay area.

You may spot bat boxes throughout the park, providing important habitat for these incredible animals. If you do, please admire them from a distance and never touch or disturb bats or their homes. ❤️
