Survey map from 1876 showing the new townsite of Sandy Bar (Sandvík) on the west shore of Lake Winnipeg. Notice the names of the streets. George Street was in honour of the surveyor, George McPhillips, while Peter and Paul Streets were named for two Icelandic members of the survey gang, Pétur Pálsson and Páll Jóhannsson, both homesteaders on adjacent lands (Jáðar snd Víkkngsstaðir).

Our priceless Fagriskógur house as we enter 2026 - with deep appreciation to our benefactors who have helped save and restore this historic building that includes a unique 145 year old log structure dating from early pioneer times. The future of Fagriskógur house is bright as we plan its further interior restoration with the goal of making it a star attraction exhibit venue celebrating local legend and folklore.

More pics of the restored log interior of the Fagriskógur house, with a new wooden ceiling and a few pieces of antique furniture. Thanks, Brendan, for your work on the 1x4 ceiling and moulding. These log walls, which date from before 1880, create a unique interior like no other. The portraits are of long time occupants of this house, Ólafur Oddsson and Kristbjörg Antoníusardóttir, who took up residence in this log structure in 1879.

A generous supporter of Icelandic River Heritage Sites, Maureen Goodman Hammond of Lockport, has just sent us a second batch of the beautiful handwork she crafts from raw wool grown by the Icelandic sheep at Víðivellir next door to Engimýri. Our last batch, which included felted mitts, just sold out. If interested in any of the items shown, you can contact Wanda or Nelson.
