As harvest season peaks, gardeners think ahead to fall. It's time to plant cover crops to keep your soil protected over the winter! Cover crops are plants that regenerate the soil as they grow. Cover crops work to suppress weeds, aerate soil, and boost your garden’s sustainability and productivity.

To learn more about Urban Bounty's cover crop program and buy seed packets, check out our website shop!

The harvest is coming in hot! Tomatoes, green beans, strawberries, and summer squash all ready for picking. And it's not just us benefiting: pollinators are putting in the work too, from bumblebees to hummingbirds visiting the crocosmia.

This is what a thriving garden looks like: food for us, food for them.

We made the news! πŸŽπŸ“Ί

CBC News visited London Heritage Farm to see volunteer Bruno Verier harvesting crab apples for our Fruit Recovery Program, from trees planted by the London family back in the 1880s, originally grown for canning!

Bruno's been volunteering with us for over a decade. His take: reducing food waste is "low-hanging fruit" and Richmond has more fresh fruit than some residents can otherwise access.

This year we've already collected close to 1,000 lbs after just four picks, headed straight to partners like the Richmond Food Bank, who've seen almost 11% more households coming through their doors since the start of the year.

Mark your calendars, Richmond! Garlic Fest is back, and so are we. We smell a great afternoon coming πŸ§„

Urban Bounty will have a table at this year's Richmond Garlic Fest. Swing by to chat plots, compost, community gardens, or just to tell us your best garlic bread recipe (we're taking notes).

Huge thanks to The Sharing Farm and the City of Richmond for putting together a day full of live music, local food, farm tours, and raptor demos.

3 SISTERS GARDEN REVEAL! 4 months ago, we planted glass gem corn kernels and delicata squash seeds in our office. Now, the garden is in full bloom πŸ˜‹

Watch to see its progress through the season!

This 3 Sisters Garden at Alexandra is an Urban Bounty Demonstration Plot. It's managed by staff and volunteers to display sustainable gardening techniques! The 3 Sisters are a smart choice for community gardens since they don't require much maintenance - the sisters take care of each other πŸŒ½πŸ«›πŸ
