On May 15, our Seniors' Shopping & Social Meals program held its first session of the year! At Save-On-Foods Ironwood, volunteers met with a group of older adults and helped them shop for groceries. Afterwards, everyone had lunch together at Cafe de A, where they enjoyed a variety of Hong Kong-style dishes.

For isolated seniors, the program promotes both food security and social engagement, giving them an opportunity to get out of the house and actively participate in community life. If you know an older adult who might benefit from the program, please contact Pamela Lui - [email protected] - for information on how to register.

A huge thank you to TD Bank Group, UMC Charity, and our local TELUS Community Ambassadors for their financial support in creating a more caring community for seniors.

From the Canadian Ski Patrol to Gateway Theatre, there have been many stops along Wayne Gibson's volunteer journey. His most recent is right here at RCRG, where he serves as a Volunteer Driver with our Better at Home program.

Whether he's bringing seniors to medical appointments or creating small but meaningful connections, Wayne does far more than offer a ride. He treasures moments like greeting a longtime client in Cantonese - something that started as a simple effort to communicate but has grown into a genuine act of warmth and kindness that brightens both of their days.

Curious how a single volunteer role can make such a difference in someoneโ€™s life and strengthen an entire community? Read Wayne's full story in the latest installment of our blog series celebrating the International Year of Volunteers rcrg.org/WayneGibson

Through a Youth Neighbourhood Small Grant project, Chatwin Lee turned his passion for volleyball into an opportunity to bring people together. After receiving a $500 grant, he organized a community volleyball tournament by renting a gym, planning the event, and providing snacks and drinks to keep participants energized throughout the day. From water and sports drinks to fruit, chips, and granola bars, every detail helped create a welcoming and enjoyable environment for everyone involved.

To make the tournament even more exciting, each player on the winning team received a $25 Amazon gift card, adding a fun and competitive spirit to the event.

On tournament day, the gym was filled with energy as friends, classmates, and community members came together to play, cheer each other on, and connect through sport. More than just a volleyball tournament, the project became a meaningful way to strengthen community connections, create lasting memories, and share a love for volleyball with others.

We're delighted to welcome Luana Maximo Gasperotto to the RCRG team as our new Community Connector!

Working in our Seniors Community Support Services department, Luana will help older adults explore community programs and activities, with a focus on healthy aging. Through ongoing, one-on-one support, she'll assist clients in developing personalized wellness plans, so they can remain independent and engaged in community life.

Luana holds a Masters of Education from Brock University, with a specialization in Educational Psychology. Sheโ€™s supported individuals through complex personal and systemic barriers, gaining experience, most recently, at Bridges Niagara Immigrant and Refugee Services. While there, she conducted needs assessments and assisted clients, including many older adults, by connecting them to appropriate community, settlement, and mental health services.

As a newcomer to Canada, Luana has personally experienced how challenging it can feel to navigate a new environment, which has shaped her commitment to supporting others in finding connection, belonging, and the resources they need to thrive.

We know she'll be a great addition to RCRG, and we hope you'll join us in offering her a very warm welcome!

The Alzheimer Society of BC and Yukon is seeking Cantonese-speaking volunteers to support its Coffee & Chat social program, which is designed to help clients meet new people, engage in social activities, and have fun!

During the sessions, which take place Thursdays from 11:00am - 12:30pm, you'll assist with set-up and clean-up, provide positive verbal support and encouragement to participants, and help foster social interaction by ensuring everyone's included.
