Earlier this year, 10 students from Tk̓emlúps te Secwépemc completed their Carpentry Level 1 training through Thompson Rivers University.

From January to March, students built strong foundations in the trades—developing technical skills through hands-on projects, earning industry-recognized safety certifications and applying the BC Building Code in real-world settings. They also gave back to their community by building concrete flower beds for a local elementary school.

Through site visits, cultural learning, and direct engagement with employers like EllisDon, FortisBC, and Interior Health, students gained valuable experience and built relationships in the industry.

Today, many are already working in construction roles and preparing to work on the Kamloops Cancer Care Centre project.

Programs like this show what’s possible when training, community and industry come together. We're proud to support opportunities that create pathways into the skilled trades.

June 21 marks National Indigenous Peoples Day — a time to celebrate the rich cultures, traditions, and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples across Canada.

It's also a time to honour the strength and resilience of Indigenous communities and reflect on the shared responsibility in advancing true and meaningful reconciliation.

We are grateful to have the opportunity to operate across a diverse province that includes 35 First Nations, encompassing more than 200 First Nations communities, as well as Métis Chartered Communities and Inuit Peoples. We are committed to supporting trades training in partnership with Indigenous communities across the province.

Tradespeople are in demand throughout BC, including rural and remote communities. BC is adding 5,000 trades training seats across every region this year.

The new seats will reduce wait lists for in-demand apprenticeship programs, introduce more young people to trades and increase training capacity in high-demand careers, including:
• construction and housing
• critical minerals
• automotive
• manufacturing
• clean energy

This expanded training will help people gain the skills and experience they need to access good-paying jobs, support their families and build their futures in the communities they call home.

Today, SkilledTradesBC is launching the Workforce Readiness Initiative, a project-based funding program to expand access to trades training across the province.

This initiative will strengthen pathways into the trades, support apprenticeship progression and completion, and improve access to training for Indigenous Peoples and those in rural and remote communities.

Through collaboration with training providers, employers and communities, this work will help build the skilled workforce needed to support B.C.’s growing economy.

After devastating flooding in 2021, the Halalt First Nation turned recovery into opportunity with a carpentry trade program that’s rebuilding the homes in their community.

From classroom learning in the morning to hands-on training on-site in the afternoon, these apprentices are gaining the experience they need to work toward Red Seal certification.

Congratulations to Team B.C. 👏 Students and apprentices from across the province competed at the Skills Canada Nationals in Toronto last week, going up against the top young talent from across the country.

Together, they brought home an incredible 27 medals! 🥇🥈🥉

We applaud every competitor who stepped up, from regional to provincial competitions to the national stage, and to everyone who supported them along the way!
