Please be advised that Highway 548 at Richardson Creek Bridge has been reopened to controlled daytime traffic effective September 7, 2026, following the previous full road closure associated with the ongoing bridge construction works.

Traffic is currently being permitted across the bridge during daytime hours under temporary traffic control measures, including traffic control barrels, signage, and flagging operations.

The current traffic arrangement is as follows:

Location: Highway 548 at Richardson Creek Bridge
Daytime: Road open to controlled traffic

Traffic Control: Single-lane controlled traffic with temporary traffic control measures and flagging

Nighttime: Road remains closed to traffic

Full Reopening: To occur once the permanent guide rail and bridge railing systems have been installed

The temporary daytime traffic arrangement will remain in place while GIP completes the outstanding permanent guide rail and bridge railing works. Nighttime closures will continue as a safety precaution until these permanent roadside safety systems are completed.

GIP is actively coordinating the delivery and installation of the outstanding components, and full unrestricted two-way traffic will be restored as soon as the permanent safety systems are completed.

A Community Reminder: Preventing Grass Fires

A small act of carelessness can have significant consequences, particularly during dry conditions.

On Saturday, a grass fire on St. Joseph Island was fortunately brought under control with the assistance of a local farmer. The Fire Department attended and thoroughly wet down the affected area. Nearby, baled hay presented an additional and potentially serious fire hazard.

This incident is a timely reminder that cigarette butts should never be discarded from a vehicle or onto the ground. What may seem insignificant can easily ignite dry grass, spread quickly, and place farms, property, and our community at risk.

Keeping St. Joseph Island safe is a shared responsibility. Please take the extra moment to dispose of cigarette butts properly and responsibly.

Let’s protect the Island we all value keeping St. Joseph Island safe, clean, and cared for.
