SHAVE THE DATE-A REMARKABLE ACT OF GIVING BACK

Dr. Anthony DeJesus and Dr. Tara Avelino, two outstanding physicians celebrating 10 years of serving our community, wanted to do something truly “out of the box” to give back to the place they proudly call home.

Their idea? SHAVE the Day!

After growing their hair for an extended period, Anthony and Tara made the incredible decision to shave it all off and donate it to Angel Hair for Kids, helping children who have lost their hair during cancer treatment. In addition, all funds raised through their event were directed to support the Palliative Care Unit at Renfrew Victoria Hospital.

The goal of this initiative is to help create a more private, comfortable, and home-like environment for patients and families receiving care in our Palliative Care Unit. Through the generosity of event supporters, more than $6,645 has been raised to purchase new furniture and amenities that will enhance these spaces for families during some of life’s most difficult moments.

The event itself was an incredible success, filled with laughter, tears, and overwhelming support from patients, friends, families, and community members. The RVH Foundation was honoured to partner with Anthony and Tara on this meaningful initiative.

Holding the event during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month made it even more impactful. As a parent of a childhood cancer survivor, I can personally attest to the difference programs like Angel Hair for Kids make for children facing cancer treatments. The confidence, hope, and comfort these wigs provide are truly invaluable.

On behalf of childhood cancer patients, survivors, and their families, I extend my heartfelt thanks to Anthony and Tara for their generous and unique gift. Their commitment has made a meaningful difference in the lives of children battling cancer while also enhancing the care and comfort provided through our Palliative Care Unit.

Our community is incredibly fortunate to have Dr. DeJesus and Dr. Avelino not only as dedicated physicians, but also as compassionate community leaders who continually go above and beyond for their patients and neighbours.

Anthony and Tara, thank you for your generosity, your kindness, and the tremendous impact you have made. You truly ROCK THE BALD!

Ten years ago, we arrived in Renfrew, full heads of hair, and absolutely no idea how deeply this community would shape our lives. Being your family doctor has been the privilege of our careers — and some of our most meaningful work has been in palliative care.
Walking with patients and families through life’s final chapters is an honour that changes you. We’ve seen firsthand how compassionate, high‑quality palliative care at Renfrew Victoria Hospital brings comfort, dignity, and peace when it matters most.

A decade of service felt like something worth celebrating… and maybe doing something a little bold.
So last year, we made a pact:
Grow the hair. Mark the milestone. Make it count.
On September 4, we’re taking it all off — both of us, both heads, zero hesitation.
The Impact
This isn’t just a haircut. It’s a double‑impact shave:
● For Renfrew: Every dollar raised goes directly to the RVH Palliative Care program, supporting local patients and families right here at home.
● For the Kids: Our hair will be donated to the Angel Hair for Kids Foundation, helping create wigs for children experiencing medical hair loss.
