Sunday, June 21st, 2026 was the 30th anniversary of National Indigenous Peoples Day in Canada. Events were held leading up to, and on the day, around the province in recognition and celebration of the diverse cultures, heritage and contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis people in our country.
Lieutenant Governor Bernadette McIntyre attended Regina’s National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration on Friday, June 19th in Victoria Park. The event began with a Grand Entry and was followed by greetings from dignitaries, including Her Honour, and performances on and around the stage. Her Honour enjoyed the traditional drumming and dancing, as well as cultural displays and activities.
National Indigenous Peoples Day is over for this year, but National Indigenous History Month continues through until the end of June. Indigenous History Month in Canada began in 2009 when the House of Commons designated June as National Aboriginal History Month. The name was changed to National Indigenous History Month in 2017. The designation encourages us to learn more about the traditions and heritage of First Nations, Inuit and Métis in Canada. It is also an opportunity to reflect on how we can all contribute to reconciliation.
