June is National Indigenous History Month in Canada, an opportunity to learn about the unique cultures, traditions and experiences of First Nations, Inuit and Métis who have lived on this land since time immemorial and whose presence continues to shape Canada today. It is also a moment for reflection and to recognize the ongoing impacts of colonization and to reflect on how we can all contribute to reconciliation.

The campaign dates back to 2009, when the House of Commons designated June as National Aboriginal History Month. The name was changed to National Indigenous History Month in 2017.

Next time you're in the Archer Library, check out the counter near the Help Desk where we've assembled a selection of related books about Indigenous history, trailblazers, struggles, identity, creativity, and futures. Plenty more exists online as well, so consult with a staff member at the Help Desk about finding this material.

Coming up next with the Archer Book Club, the oft-referenced The Hunger Games (2008) by Suzanne Collins. This month's discussion will touch on the book's themes of totalitarianism; reality TV; celebrity culture; violence in society and media; class and poverty; childhood and the effects of poverty, war, or hunger; competition; heroism and the hero’s quest; moral choice; coming of age; the value of human life, and anything else Book Club readers would like to bring to the table.

Archer Book Club meetings happen on Teams, and link information will be provided closer to the planned meeting: 12:00pm - 1:00pm, May 27th, 2026.

Every month the Archer Book Club meets to discuss a stimulating and/or noteworthy book in an enlightening, low-pressure environment where readers are encouraged to participate as much or as little as they wish.
