NEW IRCC PUBLIC POLICY | WORK PERMIT HOLDERS MAY STUDY WITHOUT A STUDY PERMIT

Effective September 4, 2026, IRCC has introduced a temporary public policy that may allow certain work permit holders to study in Canada without obtaining a study permit.

This is particularly important for work permit holders who may have received a subsequent work permit, such as a work permit extension.

🎓 What does this mean?

If you are eligible under the new public policy:

✅ You may study at an institution of your choice without a study permit
✅ Your program or course must be 6 months or less
✅ You do not need to submit a separate application to benefit from this measure
✅ Your authorization to study is tied to the validity of your work permit

⚠️ Important limitations

This does NOT mean that all work permit holders can study indefinitely without a study permit.

If your program:

❌ Is longer than 6 months, or
❌ Extends beyond the validity of your work permit or the expiry of the public policy,

you will need to apply for and obtain a study permit before continuing your studies.

Also, IRCC specifically advises eligible individuals to keep the notification email for their records and provide it to an educational institution if requested as confirmation of their eligibility.

67th Work Permit and our 37th and 38th Study Permit Approvals! Now at 379 Successfully Represented Applications!

Congratulations to our clients from Melfort, Saskatchewan and from the Philippines as well on the approval of one Work Permit for dependent spouse and two Study Permits dependent kids!

This one is worth explaining, because fast is not the usual story here. This family had already been refused once, applying years ago as dependants of an international student. A refusal on file means the next application does not get a fresh look. It gets a closer one.

So we changed the footing entirely. The principal applicant had gone to Canada alone to study and work, and eventually earned an employer's support. The family came to me for representation on the SINP application, and the nomination came through under the Students Stream. That nomination is what made the family eligible to reapply, this time as the family of a provincial nominee rather than as student dependants.

Filed August 20. Approved September 7. Eighteen days, and every one of them resting on the years of groundwork that came first.

All three now have passport requests to finalize, and the family will be reunited in Canada while the permanent residence application through the SINP nomination runs to completion.

66th Work Permit Approval! Now at 376 Successfully Represented Applications!

Congratulations to our client from Regina, Saskatchewan on the approval of his SINP Nominee-based Work Permit extension!

He is the principal applicant in a family of five, so keeping his work authorization intact is what keeps the whole household settled here. We filed the extension on August 8 and IRCC issued the final decision on September 2. That is 18 business days from receipt to approval, with no break in his status along the way.

The new permit runs to September 2, 2029. Three more secure years in Saskatchewan for him to keep working and for the family to keep building their life here while the permanent residence pathway through the SINP nomination continues.
