If you're like me, you may be following Canada's efforts to reduce poverty. It's disheartening to hear that Food Banks Canada's recent "report card" on poverty in Alberta had a D- rating due to housing affordability and fixed costs that weigh heavily on many households. My heart goes out to those facing these difficulties. The Canadian Poverty Institute (CPI) defines poverty as the lack of resources and means to maintain a basic standard of living and participate in society, encompassing material, social, and spiritual aspects.

At the Central Alberta Pregnancy Care Centre, we are dedicated to supporting clients facing the challenges of poverty. Our clothing boutique helps address material poverty, offering maternity wear, baby clothes, diapers, wipes, formula, and toiletries. We understand that life can often feel isolating, which is why we provide one-on-one visits and group sessions. These gatherings foster connections and build a strong sense of community, helping alleviate social poverty and reminding our clients that they are not alone in their experiences. We also recognize that spiritual poverty can deeply affect one's sense of meaning and purpose, impacting personal resilience. For those who are interested, staff and volunteers are here to offer spiritual insights and support, helping clients to navigate their feelings and find hope in their journeys.

Sincerely,
Lisa Smith

For over 3 decades, our mission has been to equip and empower individuals and families seeking pregnancy-related support in Central Alberta.

Whether someone is facing an unexpected pregnancy, navigating the pain of pregnancy loss or abortion, or learning how to build healthy relationships and positive parenting skills, we are here with accurate information and compassionate care.

Through education and practical resources, we walk alongside families in every season. No one should have to face these moments alone.

We are looking for a new or gently used propane BBQ for our Maternity Home so that the ladies can enjoy the warmer summer weather. If you have one you’d like to donate to the program, please get in touch with us.

Summer is almost here, which means sunscreen season is almost here.

Keeping little ones safe in the sun doesn’t have to feel overwhelming. Here are a few simple tips to protect your family this summer:
▫️ Choose SPF 30 or higher and apply sunscreen 15–30 minutes before heading outside
▫️ Broad-spectrum sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays
▫️ Don’t forget the ears, back of the neck, tops of feet and behind the knees
▫️ Reapply often. Every two hours, and sooner after swimming or sweating
▫️Babies under 6 months old need extra care. Keep them in the shade as much as possible and use lightweight protective clothing and hats.

Sun safety is one small way we protect the precious people in our lives. A little preparation goes a long way toward safe, happy summer memories.

An unexpected pregnancy can feel like an emotional rollercoaster. You might move between shock, fear, confusion, hope, or even excitement, sometimes all within the same hour. Holding mixed emotions doesn’t mean you’re doing something wrong; it means you’re processing something significant and deeply personal.

As you navigate this season, give yourself permission to feel what you feel without judgment. Pause to breathe, talk things through with someone safe and gather clear information about your options. You are allowed time, support and space to make an informed decision.
