Reg Warkentin for Red Deer Public School Board Trustee

Reg Warkentin for Red Deer Public School Board Trustee Reg is a 2021 candidate for Red Deer Public School District Board Trustee

10/18/2021

Vote for trustees that focus on the students but can find balance and harmony with parents and teachers.

There will never be "enough" money. There will always be tough choices and those unhappy with decisions. Still, we have the resources to ensure students receive quality education in a safe and comfortable setting.

We can never be satisfied with the status quo and must always look for ways to improve. I don't want RDPSD to be good, I want it to be the best. That is why I'm running. Vote today!

If elected my priorities are as follows:

1. Focus on early literacy and numeracy.

2. Grow early intervention opportunities for children falling behind.

3. Ensure RDPSD students are equipped with the skills and traits needed to succeed in the jobs of today and the future.

4. Ensure RDPSD fosters a culture that promotes collaboration between students, parents and teachers.

5. Build positive relationships with the province to effectively advocate RDPSD priorities.

Though often overshadowed by the race for mayor and council, school trustees are among the most important elected positions in our political system.

Trustees are ultimately responsible for the education students receive through their fiduciary and strategic leadership that shapes how a school district looks and operates.

In the RDPSD trustee candidate forum I laid out my vision for a district that’s works collaboratively with our teachers, students and and provincial funders with a student focused, nuts and bolts approach to education.

Thank you to Red Deer Public Schools for organizing and hosting this forum.

When it comes to the DRAFT curriculum, it’s time to end the scorched earth, anti-everything policy.

Independent, non-partisan experts are celebrating aspects of the new curriculum, such as language arts and math while fairly criticizing other parts. You don’t throw the baby out with the bath water. RDPSD needs to ensure it has a students-first approach that remains non-political.

Before the pandemic began, 30 per cent of Alberta elementary aged students were reading below their grade level. Between 2007 to 2019, Alberta’s innumeracy rate doubled from 6 to 12 per cent.

This is absolutely unacceptable in a province as wealthy as ours.

The future success of students is dependent on early literacy and numeracy. We need immediate intervention to focus on the nuts and bolts of what and how we teach.

This evening at 7:00 p.m. (October the 5th), RDPSD will be hosting a forum for the candidates for Trustee. It can be viewed online here:

I've decided to run to be a Trustee of the RDPSD because I believe in a public school that respects choice while instilling the fundamentals of education with a focus on reading, writing, arithmetic and resiliency.

Along with parents, the school system is responsible for preparing students to be successful adults capable of critical thought and adaptation in a modern economy. Schools need to teach kids how to think - not what to think

My community and business-focused policy, advocacy, and governance experience will be of significant benefit as our school district manages difficult fiduciary choices.
