💧Stream flows in Kootenay National Park have returned to seasonal averages and the area closures of Marble Canyon and Vermilion Lake Day Use Area have been lifted.

⚠️The Dog Lake suspension bridge will remain closed until further notice. The bridge requires an assessment after being struck by debris carried by the high water.

⚠️If you are visiting Kootenay in the coming days, be aware that the recent high streamflow may have caused erosion and undercut the shoreline of rivers and creeks.

⚠️Be cautious when travelling near moving water and if you plan on travelling in the backcountry you may encounter hazards like debris, damaged bridges and washed-out sections of trail.

⚠️ Environment Canada has issued a Special Weather Statement for Kootenay National Park, with 40–80 mm of rain expected between today and Tuesday. This rainfall, combined with already high water levels, will continue to impact rivers and streams across the park.

🌊 Current conditions
Water levels in the Kootenay River and other waterways remain elevated and may rise quickly with continued precipitation. Some low-lying areas are experiencing mild flooding.

🚧 What visitors need to know
Roads
- Check DriveBC.ca before you travel
- Drive to conditions

Facilities and trails
-For safety, closures are in place for Vermilion Crossing day-use area, Dog Lake bridge, and the Marble Canyon trail and day-use facilities
-Additional temporary closures may be implemented as needed

🛠️ Parks Canada response
Parks Canada is actively monitoring conditions and responding as needed, including removing debris from under bridges with heavy equipment to prevent log jams.

⚠️ Safety reminders
Stay well back the edge of rivers and streams: fast-moving water can erode shorelines and pathways without warning, causing them to collapse. Closely supervise children when near water.

Conditions can change quickly: creek crossings that may have been passable earlier in the day can become dangerous as melting increases or with rainfall.

Heat and rain increase avalanche risk: Large amounts of snow are still present at higher elevation areas. The heat and rain we are experiencing increases avalanche hazard.

Please respect all closures and signage.

⚠️ High Streamflow Advisory Update

Going into the weekend, water levels are well above normal due to warm temperatures melting a deep snowpack. Rain is expected throughout the weekend meaning river levels will remain high.

🌧️ What to expect:
-Some low-lying areas are experiencing minor flooding
-Dog Lake bridge is currently closed
-Parks Canada is monitoring the situation and will deploy temporary closures of trails and day-use areas as necessary

Reminder:
✔️Please respect all closures and signage
✔️Avoid flooded areas
✔️Stay well back from riverbanks, which may be unstable
✔️Do not enter or paddle in fast-moving water—even shallow water can be dangerous

🚧Culvert repairs (km 27.5)

These projects will improve public safety and critical infrastructure along Highway 93S.
Visitors to Kootenay National Park should prepare for traffic delays until October 2026. Delays could reach 45 mins during peak traffic times.

Parks Canada encourages visitors to plan ahead, budget extra time, and check https://www.drivebc.ca/ for current construction impacts.

⚠️ Due to the combination of high snowpack, warm temperatures and forecasted rain, many rivers and streams in Kootenay National Park are flowing at higher-than-normal levels. These conditions are expected to continue over the weekend and into Monday.

🌧️ Some low-lying areas are experiencing nuisance flooding and visitors may encounter temporary closures of trails and day use areas in impacted areas, this includes a closure of the Dog Lake Bridge.

If you’re visiting the park, here’s some safety tips to keep in mind when you’re around flowing water:

💧 Stay well back the edge of rivers and streams: fast-moving water can erode shorelines and pathways without warning, causing them to collapse. Closely supervise children when near water.

💧 Conditions can change quickly: creek crossings that may have been passable earlier in the day can become dangerous as melting increases or with rainfall.

💧Heat and rain increase avalanche risk: Large amounts of snow are still present at higher elevation areas. The heat and rain we are experiencing increases avalanche hazard. Hikes like the Beehive, Plain of the Six Glaciers and Lake Agnes trails are exposed to avalanche risk and should be avoided.

Did you know an American badger’s sense of smell is up to 800 times more sensitive than a human’s? 🦡

Badgers are a species at risk, with only about 100–160 individuals in this region. At Redstreak Campground, they may dig burrows on campsites. When this happens, Parks staff will temporarily close those sites to keep badgers and campers safe.

You can help protect badgers by:
🚧 Respecting all area closures
🚗 Following posted speed limits and driving carefully
🐕 Keeping pets on a leash
🍫 Never feeding wildlife, and keeping your campsite or picnic area clean
🚌 Keeping your distance—stay at least 3 bus lengths (30 m) away
🚫 Never approaching badgers or their burrows

Badgers play an important role in grassland ecosystems by turning and aerating soil, which helps plants grow. Redstreak Campground is part of critical badger habitat —your actions make a difference in protecting these sensitive animals.

🔥 Mitchell Ridge II Guard Burning Update – May 25, 2026, 5:15 pm🔥

Smoke is currently visible within the Mitchell Ridge II guard burn area. The smoke can be seen while travelling along Highway 93S near the Kootenay River Day-use area. The smoke is from residual fire activity from the guard burning completed on May 15, 2026.

Parks Canada fire management officers are aware of this smoke - please do not report.

It is important to note that hot spots appearing after guard burning are a normal and expected part of operations. These pockets of heat can persist in heavier fuels and are proactively managed by crews.
