🚶 Crosswalks Are for Everyone. Let's Keep Them Safe.

Crosswalks help pedestrians cross the road safely, but safety is a shared responsibility.

Drivers:
🚗 Slow down and stay alert when approaching crosswalks.
🛑 Stop and yield to pedestrians who are in, or entering, the crosswalk.
👀 Never pass a vehicle that has stopped at a crosswalk—it may be stopped for someone crossing.

Pedestrians:
🚶 Cross only at designated crosswalks whenever possible.
👀 Make eye contact with drivers before stepping into the roadway.
📵 Stay alert and avoid distractions like phones or headphones while crossing.

A few extra seconds of patience and attention can prevent a serious collision.

KRPF Reminds Public: Electric Dirt Bikes Are Not E-Bikes

The Kennebecasis Regional Police Force (KRPF) is reminding residents that electric dirt bikes are not considered e-bikes and are subject to different legal requirements.

KRPF has received an increasing number of complaints involving electric dirt bikes being operated in the community, including in areas where their use may create safety concerns for riders, pedestrians, cyclists, and motorists.

Electric dirt bikes are subject to applicable provisions of the New Brunswick Motor Vehicle Act and Off-Road Vehicle Act.

An electric dirt bike has all four of the following characteristics:
• It is not moved by human propulsion and does not have functional pedals;
• It has a saddle or seat for the rider;
• It uses a throttle to accelerate; and
• It is steered using handlebars.

These characteristics distinguish electric dirt bikes from pedal-assisted e-bikes.

Enforcement:
KRPF members will be enforcing applicable legislation relating to the unlawful operation of electric dirt bikes.

Electric dirt bikes are not permitted in areas where motorized vehicle use is prohibited, which may include public roads, sidewalks, parks, walking trails, school grounds, parking lots, and other public areas.

Individuals operating these vehicles unlawfully may face enforcement action, including fines and, where applicable, seizure and impoundment of the vehicle at the owner’s expense.

Ride Safely and Responsibly:
Electric dirt bikes can reach significant speeds and can create serious safety risks when operated around pedestrians, children, cyclists, or motor vehicles.

Riders should always wear an approved, properly fitted helmet and appropriate protective equipment, operate at a safe speed, maintain control of the vehicle, and only ride in locations where operation is legally permitted.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to understand the capabilities and legal requirements of these vehicles before purchasing one or allowing a young person to operate one.

Know Before You Ride:
KRPF encourages riders, parents, guardians, and vehicle owners to familiarize themselves with the applicable legislation before operating an electric dirt bike.

Owners and riders are responsible for ensuring these vehicles are operated legally, safely, and responsibly.

Here are a few ways we can all help keep students safe:

🚗 **Drivers**
• Slow down in school zones and watch your speed.
• Be prepared to stop at crosswalks.
• Always stop for school buses displaying flashing red lights.
• Stay focused and put distractions away.

🚶 **Parents & Caregivers**
• Walk younger children through their route to school before the first day.
• Talk about using crosswalks and looking both ways before crossing.
• Remind children to stay alert by keeping phones and headphones put away while walking.

🚲 **Students Cycling to School**
• Always wear a properly fitted helmet.
• Stay visible and use hand signals when turning.
• Follow the rules of the road and be predictable.

Every safe trip to school starts with a shared commitment to looking out for one another. Let's work together to help every student arrive safely—on the first day of school and every day after.

Know the Law – Ellen’s Law

New Brunswick’s Motor Vehicle Act requires drivers to leave at least one metre of space when passing a cyclist. Failing to do so may result in a $172.50 fine and three demerit points.

🚴 Share the Road. Arrive Safe.

Whether you’re driving a vehicle or riding a bicycle, we all have a role to play in keeping our roads safe. Every trip is safer when we look out for one another and follow the rules of the road.

For Drivers:
• Leave at least one metre of space when passing a cyclist (Ellen’s Law).
• Slow down and cross the centre line only when it is safe to do so.
• Watch carefully for cyclists, especially before turning or opening your door.
• Never stop or park in designated bike lanes.

For Cyclists:
• Wear a properly fitted helmet.
• Increase your visibility with bright clothing and lights or reflective gear, especially at night.
• Ride on the right side of the road or in designated bike lanes where available.
• Use hand signals, make eye contact with drivers, and avoid distractions

Road safety is a shared responsibility. Whether you’re on two wheels or four, stay alert, be courteous, and help ensure everyone gets home safely.
