🌱 Celebrating Organic Month with research, innovation - and a few discerning cows! 🐄
What makes a pasture truly resilient? It’s not enough for the plants to thrive in the field, the cows have to want to eat them!
OSC4 researchers are exploring strategies to enhance pasture system resilience in organic dairy production. An early study enlisted the help of Holstein dairy cows to test the palatability of promising forage species.
The researchers reported that:
🌱 The cows found all the forage mixtures tested to be palatable.
🌿 But they showed a preference for legumes like alfalfa, clovers and birdsfoot trefoil.
🐄 And just like us, cows don’t all have the same taste! Their differing forage preferences highlight the potential value of multispecies pastures in offering cows a greater variety of forage to choose from.
