History of the Department

The Bow Horn Bay Fire Department was established in 1952 as the Qualicum Bay Fire Department, but that name was confusing because of the proximity to the Qualicum Beach Fire Department and the fact that the coverage area was expanding. So in 1956, it was renamed the Bow Horn Bay Fire Department (an amalgam for Bowser, Horne Lake Road and Qualicum Bay area). After movin

g several times from one inadequate building to another, a purpose built three-bay hall was erected on Lions Way in Qualicum Bay in 1978. A couple of years later another two bays were added on to the rear of the present hall. We presently have seven vehicles:

Starting this Thursday, September 3rd at noon, the campfire ban (Category 1) is being lifted. It's still dry out there, so please be careful.
Any sort of backyard burn piles, burn barrels, etc. are still banned. Some areas may choose to still not allow campfires.

A category 1 campfire, as defined in the Wildfire Regulation, refers to any fire that is:

No larger than 0.5 metres high (20") by 0.5 metres wide (20")
Used for recreational purposes.

Any person burning a category 1 campfire must:

Only light a fire if conditions are safe and will continue to be safe.

Establish and maintain a fuel break around the category 1 campfire.

Have at least one person watching the fire that is equipped with at least one firefighting hand tool or 8 litres of water.

Ensure the fire is fully extinguished before leaving the area.

Carry out fire control immediately if the fire spreads beyond the fuel break or becomes out of control and report the fire as soon as possible.

Our members have deployed to the mainland with Errington Fire Department and Dashwood Fire department to assist with wildfire operations.
We are grateful that we can assist with these efforts.

The Lighthouse Community Hall’s Summer Break Camp stopped by today for some lessons. A little quick hit, a little CPR, and some aMazing fun.
