The Portage Economic Response Team (PERT) has analyzed the valuable insights collected through conversations with local businesses across the region during the 2025 Business Walks. The report is now released and includes first-hand accounts of the opportunities, challenges, and priorities shaping our local economy.

The report highlights commonalities including workforce needs, growth opportunities, business climate trends, and areas where the community can better support entrepreneurship and investment.

This work is part of the collaborative effort of the Portage Economic Response Team, a partnership of regional organizations working together to support business growth, share resources, and strengthen economic development across the Region of Portage la Prairie.

We’re taking a moment to recognize some meaningful milestones within the PRED team 🙌

During the Western Canada Economic Forum this month our Director of Economic Development was named one of the Top 20 Impactful Leaders in Economic Development and Business Growth in Western Canada. Those who work alongside Eve know this recognition reflects her thoughtful leadership, collaborative spirit, and unwavering commitment to building a strong, resilient regional economy.

We’re also very proud to share that Inem officially earned her Project Management Professional (PMP) designation in 2025, a globally recognized credential that strengthens our team’s ability to deliver strategic, well-executed initiatives in service of our region.

These achievements speak to the depth of expertise, professionalism, and purpose behind the work happening at PRED every day. We’re grateful to work alongside leaders who quietly raise the bar for our community and our region!

Turning Ideas into Action: Business Workshop at Dakota Tipi

PRED was proud to partner with Community Futures White Horse Plains and Dakota Tipi First Nation for a full-day business workshop that brought together 15 aspiring entrepreneurs ready to take the next step in their business journeys.

From funding insights shared by Deborah Smith with Community Futures Indigenous Business Development Services, to hands-on idea validation with Noah Wilson from Futurpreneur, participants explored local supports, including opportunities through the Prairie Project Studio, and Chamber of Commerce.

A huge thank-you to Dakota Tipi leadership, our partners, and everyone who joined us for an inspiring day of learning, networking, and growth.

Last year, the Portage Economic Response Team (PERT) visited 107 local businesses during our 2024 Business Walk Blitz. Together, we identified three key priorities:

>Retail Crime Prevention
>Labour & Workforce Challenges
>Economic Uncertainty
