June's featured Art of the City is Welh Aynexw Nseyxnitm (The Guardian Spirits) by Jody Broomfield. These two house posts stand at the Galleria entrance to the Civic Centre (south doors).

The design features both female and male welcome figures. The female sculpture represents the status of the life givers. It pays homage to the mothers and grandmothers – the caretakers, in our traditional matriarchal family system. The women were the ones who prepared the food, gathered the water and fruits, and made the woven blankets, clothing and hats for the family. The male sculpture represents the guardian – the one who watches over the family. He is also the provider and the builder of canoes, homes and shelters. The men also gathered food, providing fish or game for the family.

The top section of each house post depicts the scenic, majestic coastal mountains, the great hunting grounds for food and the beautiful place we call home. The base of each house post depicts the movement of water, thus representing the streams, rivers and ocean, which provide nourishing drinking water and food from the sea.

Join us Tuesday, June 23 for a special treat as Art at Council features the Port Moody Blue Thunder Marching Band performing in the roundabout outside of the City Hall Galleria at 7pm.

The Blue Thunder Marching Band is the culmination of the PMSS Blue Thunder Marching Arts program and is a way for all band members to contribute to both the school and greater community by spreading joy through music. The Blue Thunder Marching Band was seen this year at many sporting events including Centennial Football, Vancouver FC, and had their debut performance at the PoCo MayDay parade as well as the internationally renowned Victoria Day Parade in Victoria, BC. On Saturday, Councillors Knowles, Agtarap, and Morrison joined mural artist Amy Bao, Youth Focus Committee members, Kwikwetlem First Nation Elder Xem-Tu-Mus (Stephen Armstrong), City staff, and community members for a celebration of the new mural now completed at the Rotary Sk8 Park!

The mural, titled "West Coast" is a culmination of the SK8 Park Mural Project, a collaborative initiative to create a meaningful and vibrant public artwork. The process was hands-on for the Youth Focus Committee from start to finish: starting with selecting the theme in 2024 and carrying on through artist selection, contributing ideas, and even picking up paintbrushes to paint a portion of the new mural!
