We have a new line up this year. We are currently offering 4 free sessions at the PHLC (Port Hawkesbury Literacy Council) – Computers for Adults 2023/2024.
The 4 Free sessions 1 day/week (Mon, Tue, Wed or Thur) 3.5 hrs/day starting at 9:00am (this start time is flexible) for 9 weeks.
Please bring a light snack/lunch as we will break for 15 mins at 10:50am (flexible), we will provide tea & coffee

Monday - Sept 16 - Nov 11th - Beginner Windows 10/11
Tuesday - Sept 17 - Nov 12th - Beginner iPad/Smartphone
Wednesday - Sept 18 - Nov 13th - Beginner Windows 10/11
Thursday - Sept 19 - Nov 14th - Beginner iPad/Smartphone

This is a perfect time to come and try a Windows 10/11 laptop or an iPad or Chromebook before you buy, as the PHLC has these devices that we loan during the sessions!

I am looking for anyone who would be interested in having a Beginner Chromebook sessions during the 2nd semester. As mentioned above the PHLC has chromebooks to loan out if you don't own one. I am also looking to know what day of the week works best for you (first choice, second choice, etc..).

Our plan is to offer an Intermediate Windows 10/11 and iPad/iPhone course in our 2nd semester starting on Nov 18th, 2024. If you are interested please email Gary Wagner at [email protected]. I am also looking to know what day of the week works best for you (first choice, second choice, etc..).

I am looking for anyone who is interested in having a 2 day course on using smartphones (iPhones, Android). It would be something like a (Monday + Wednesday for iPhone and Tuesday + Thursday for Android). This course is for a beginner level and will cover the hardware as well as using the builtin apps and downloading some apps. I do not have any loaner phones however if there are people who don't have a phone and want to learn about them I will try to see if I can get loaner phone from one of the local cellular companies.
We provide loaner laptops, iPads, Chromebooks. I encourage anyone who owns one of these to please bring it.

Our front door faces the Wharf – parking is available in the lower area and handicap parking available on the side of the building. Please park to the far left by the rock retaining wall!

On October 2nd, the Strait Area Seniors Club as part of its “Lunch and Learn” series will be hosting a “MEET YOUR CANDIDATES” session leading to the upcoming October 19th municipal elections.

All candidates have been asked to speak for 10 minutes each, presenting their platforms for potential election to the Port Hawkesbury town council. All sessions will be live streamed on our page located at: https://www.facebook.com/EvergreenSeniorsClub/

We hope that you will be able to attend in person or that you can watch the Facebook Live video beginning at 11:00 AM on October 2, 2024.

The candidates running for the office of Councillor are Todd Barrett, Mike Currie, Paula Hart, Iaian Langley, Donald MacDonald, Mark MacIver, Blaine MacQuarrie and Terry Mathews.

Those running for Mayor are incumbent Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, Councillor Jason Aucoin and Archie MacLachlan.

BE SCAM SMART

While anyone is at risk of being a victim to scams and fraud, older adults are frequently targeted. Being aware of the current common scams can help you recognize and avoid them.

There is lots of information online about government benefits and programs, but unfortunately not all of it is true. Some websites contain misinformation about benefits to lure people in, and they often contain links to fake benefit applications to collect your personal information, or to put you in contact with scammers.

Don’t take the bait!

If you find yourself on a suspicious website about government benefits, do not click any links. To avoid being scammed, only refer to official Government of Canada web pages like Cananda.ca/Benefits and your provincial or territorial government’s official web pages for accurate information about government benefits.

To help you stay informed and protected from scams, the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) is hosting a Be scam smart webinar on October 9, 2024. This interactive session will equip you with the knowledge to:
• know the signs of a scam
• take steps to protect yourself from scams
• know what to do if you think you have been scammed
During the webinar, you will have the opportunity to ask questions and get answers. We look forward to sharing information to help you protect yourself from scammers and to become scam smart.
