North Island Crisis and Counselling Centre Society

North Island Crisis and Counselling Centre Society The North Island Crisis and Counselling Centre Society is a community-based, not-for-profit charitable organization serving the Mt Waddington area.

Our Staff

Our Board, staff and volunteers are made up of more than 50 people, all of whom are committed to helping families and individuals in our North Island Communities. We are conscientious in our hiring practices to ensure that everyone has the appropriate skills and experience to meet your needs. Our History

The North Island Crisis & Counselling Centre began in 1981 as the Port Hardy Crisi

s Intervention Society. The Society was formed almost entirely as the result efforts of Gillian Rippingale and Sally How. Both women recognized a crying need for counselling and support services in the community. They worked together to lobby for funding while at the same time, providing many of these services themselves on a volunteer basis. In 1981 the S.A.F.E. Family Project (Stop Abuse in the Family Environment) was begun, along with a 24-hour crisis line. It became evident that battered women needed a safe place to go and in 1983, M.S.S.H. contracted the society to provide a Safe Home program on a per diem basis. In 1985 the society received funding from the Secretary of State and a Canada Works Program to hire a coordinator and staff for a variety of programs. The Society continued to grow, accepting new programs from different ministries, branching out to preventative services along with direct crisis intervention. Over the years the focus of the Society has shifted slightly and both our name and constitution has reflected these changes. In 1986 the name was changed to the North Island Crisis Centre. This was in recognition of the fact that our perspective in lobbying for services is regional and that wherever possible, we provide direct services to the neighbouring communities. In 1989, both our constitution and name changed to reflect the changing focus of the society from crisis intervention to prevention. Ethical Practice

The North Island Crisis and Counselling Centre Society is committed to practices and decisions that:
- are based on ethical consideration and reflections
- are collegial and use a consultative approach that recognized the diversity of communities, cultures and individuals
-treat everyone with dignity, respect and civility
- are consistent with the vision, mission and goals of our Society.

Gilakas'la! Today is a special day for our Gwa'sala Nakwaxda'xw colleagues, friends and family members as they open their Gukwdzi.

This is an historic event and one that our staff are honored to witness throughout this week marking an important and powerful place for governance, potlatches, ceremonies, cultural teachings and community gathering for the Nation.

It is with deep 'maya'xala and admiration that we honor the vision and leadership that made this remarkable achievement a reality. Olak'ala ika!

Congratulations to graduate Winona Stead, the recipient of our 2026 Sally How Memorial Scholarship.

Sally How was one of the original founders and champions of the North Island Crisis & Counselling Centre. Early on she recognized a significant need for support services in the North Island and it was through her vision and tireless advocacy that led to the creation of what is now NICCCS. We are honoured to continue to memorialize her important work through this annual scholarship.

Like Sally How, Winona is also a community champion and we are proud of her accomplishments! On behalf of our entire board and staff, we wish her all the very best in her post-secondary studies (and of course we hope one day, she will come work with us!)

Congratulations Winona!

Wow! Thank you to Mid Island Co-op for the generous donation for Let's Play Infant & Toddler Centre! These funds will be used to provide a new food program for all of the children registered in our Infant & Toddler Centre - "Tuesday Tidbits" and "Fresh Fruit Fridays".

Food security is a real issue for many families in our communities and we are grateful for this support to help us provide nutritious food and snacks to all of the children in our program!

** Service Interruption Notice **
May 11, 2026

Unfortunately, the Crisis Centre building flooded over the weekend resulting in some damage to several office areas. We are working hard to rectify this problem and start repairs, however this will likely result in some noise and service interruption. For today, the affected areas have been blocked off and staff will re-route visitors to other areas of the building.

Our apologies for any inconvenience and appreciate your patience while we navigate the waters. Literally. (if we can't laugh....🤷‍♀️)

May 4-9 is National Hospice Palliative Care Week and we have been busy connecting with other Hospice programs on Vancouver Island! Courtney is rounding out the week in Parksville with the Vancouver Island Federation of Hospices talking about our program and learning from other colleagues.

During National Hospice Palliative Care Week, we want to take the time to recognize the compassion, dignity and comfort that community-based hospice programs bring to individuals and their families when facing life-limiting illness. Our own community based hospice program has 6 volunteers (and Courtney!) working throughout our North Vancouver Island communities. We honor and appreciate the work that you do!

May is officially recognized as Child Care Month in British Columbia and we are proud to operate two licensed child care centres in the North Island: Let's Play Infant & Toddler Centre in Port Hardy and Let Them Play Early Learning Centre in Port McNeill.

Our two Centre managers, Hannah and Alana, are working hard this week at the Early Childhood Educators of BC Conference in Richmond. What better way to celebrate Child Care Month then with some fun learning!

Along with Hannah and Alana, we want to shout out our entire Early Years staff who work tirelessly with our littles everyday to ensure they learn, thrive, play and grow into bigger little people! We sure appreciate all that you do!
