Today, Port Coquitlam Firefighters - IAFF Local 1941 honoured four community members at a Community Hero Challenge Coin Presentation Ceremony. Reserved for individuals who demonstrate exceptional service, courage, or compassion, the coin is given sparingly and with great meaning. In recognition of his profound legacy and connection to Port Coquitlam, the coin features the image of Terry Fox.

"Terry Fox is one of Port Coquitlam's most cherished figures, not only here at home but across Canada and around the world. His image on this coin is a reminder of what one person's courage and determination can mean for all of us,” said Brad West, Port Coquitlam Mayor. β€œThe individuals we recognized today answered that call in their own way, by stepping forward without hesitation when someone needed help. That is what community looks like, and it is something this city is incredibly proud of."

2026 recipients

β–ͺ️Matt Warburton & Steve Middleton
Matt Warburton and Steve Middleton were driving along Coast Meridian Road when they came across a man who had collapsed on a rooftop where he had been working. Steve helped Matt get onto the roof, then called 9-1-1 and stayed with the patient's wife to provide support while Matt climbed up and began performing CPR, sustaining those efforts until fire crews arrived. Their quick thinking and composure under pressure made a critical difference.

β–ͺ️Devna Sunil Nambeesan
Devna was passing by Port Coquitlam City Hall when she came across a woman who had collapsed and was unresponsive. She stepped forward immediately and began performing CPR, continuing until fire crews arrived on scene. Thanks to her courageous response, the woman survived.

β–ͺ️Cole Rimek
Port Coquitlam Public Works member Cole Rimek was among the first on scene at a structure fire. He went door to door to alert occupants, called in the fire, and assisted with the evacuation before fire crews arrived. The building was non-sprinklered and equipped only with a local alarm system, making those first critical minutes essential. His presence of mind and immediate action played a significant role in ensuring all occupants were safely evacuated.

We are proud to recognize each of these community heroes.

Did you know this year's property tax increase of 1.95% for the average home is one of the lowest increases in the region, despite rising costs and broader economic pressures? About 73% of the increase relates to mandated RCMP and labour contract costs, with the remainder due to inflation, rising service-provider fees and long-term infrastructure funding. Port Coquitlam has focused on maintaining existing service levels and finding savings and efficiencies to limit costs for taxpayers.
