Ice season is back! Did you know there is a designated smoking area on the east side of the Alberni Valley Multiplex? Look for the grassy area with benches, seating and dedicated signage the next time you are taking a break.

Remember to avoid smoking by the main entrance or any doorways, windows or air intakes, as a courtesy to facility users and to comply with City bylaws. Thank you for your cooperation and understanding.

The Toy Run is almost here…. we haven’t forgotten! We have received some inquiries regarding the timing of the Argyle Redevelopment project and the Toy Run this year, so we wanted to share an update.

We have been working closely with the event’s organizers and while the Argyle St. work is slated to begin on Sept. 15th, please rest assured that the surface excavation work has been scheduled for after Sept 19th so we don’t anticipate any impacts to this year’s Run. We look forward to seeing you all there!

Continuing Uptown Revitalization efforts, Argyle Street is being redeveloped this fall! Starting the week of September 14th project setup begins. Crew vehicles will be stored at the Kingsway Avenue parking lot behind the Carmoor building. Work starts the week of September 14th with excavation for gas line work starting on the south side of Argyle Street, from 1st to 2nd Avenues, progressing to 3rd Avenue. Work will then shift to the north side of Argyle Street to replace water and storm infrastructure.
Project completion is expected summer 2027.

What’s being done?

• Replacement of aging underground infrastructure systems (water, sewer, storm)
• Separation of combined sewers
• Underground relocation of BC Hydro services (reduces visual clutter)
• Pedestrian safety enhancements
• New street trees and enhanced landscaping

Streetscape enhancements including lighting and placemaking
Access to all businesses and residences will be maintained during construction.

Parking will be temporarily unavailable in active construction zones. Motorists are asked to utilize the new parking spaces that have been added to surrounding side streets.

This project is a major investment in an important commercial corridor, and the work is expected to come in under budget.

Heads up and eyes on the road! Now in effect, the speed limit along the Wallace Street corridor from 10th Avenue to Kendall Avenue has been permanently reduced to 30km/hour - all day, every day, year-round. This change has been implemented as an important safety measure for the community, and right in time for Back to School.

Expect new road markings, signage, and flashing crosswalk beacons at the Wallace Street and Wood Avenue intersection. Community policing will be watching the road and issuing reminders.

We ask motorists to continue observing posted speed limits throughout town and to use extra caution when entering school zones and playground/park zones.
