Since he was 10 years old, Edward has attended potlatches for his late family members. Today, as an Usma Family Service social worker, those early experiences continue to guide his work. "It's taught me a lot about the value of our cultural ways," he shares.

At this year's summer youth camp, participants crafted their own beautiful handmade cedar bracelets with the guidance of Usma Family Care Worker Ramona Mark. Hands-on cultural learning like this helps strengthen our young people, builds community connections, and keeps vital traditions moving forward to the next generation.

Four years ago, Usma yaxšiƛin ('we brushed' used for a traditional brushing ceremony) its traditional canoe, the Pacific Dancer. Since then, she has carried hundreds of youth out onto our ancestral waters, reconnecting them with the land, their culture, and each other. Our Chaputs Program continues to run strong, introducing youth to the activity and teaching them safety on the water.
