Statement from Helen P**n:
I have decided to not seek re-election for Port Alberni City Council at the conclusion of my 2018-2022 term. It has been both an honour and an immense privilege to serve the people of Port Alberni. I am grateful for the trust that was placed in me. I am so proud of the work that council, staff and our community have accomplished in the past four years, including the relationships we have built with all levels of government, the relationships we built with First Nations people and governments, both professional and personal, the work we have done to provide more childcare spaces, the work we have done to facilitate more housing developments, the efforts council made to work as one in acquiring the Somass Lands to secure a different future for our community. Over the course of my term in office I have visited many other communities. I was always proud to promote Port Alberni and our corporate strategic plan, and extend invitations to all people I met to visit our community. Most enjoyable were my many visits to communities across the province to meet with elected officials and learn about the policies that either worked well or poorly for those communities, and bring back to Port Alberni what could be learned about good policy.

As you can see, with all that we accomplished, it has not been an easy decision for me not to seek re-election. There are so many good reasons to be on Port Alberni City Council during this monumental time in our history, I absolutely encourage others to participate. That’s why I voted in favour of raising council salaries for 2023 - to bring those salaries up to the provincial average for communities our size, and make it easier for working people to participate on council. We will continue to need leaders who bring a diversity of perspectives to Council.

While I have been on council I haven’t started many new projects, and I am excited to re-focus on the private sector. I’ll finish the projects that I’ve already started. When I came to Port Alberni five years ago, I saw the potential here and fell in love with the community. I thank you all wholeheartedly for welcoming me into the community and for the support you’ve given me as a community member and as a member of City Council.

I see a very promising future for Port Alberni, and I know that together we can make it even brighter.
