As summer approaches, the use of lithium-ion powered devices such as e-bikes, scooters, tools, and recreational equipment increases. Staying safe and using them properly will allow us to enjoy these activities to the fullest.

Please refer to Dashwood Volunteer Fire Departments post about a recent incident they attended. As well as the valuable information regarding this matter.

Please be aware that the BC Wildfire Service Coastal Fire Centre is implementing a fire ban on Category 1 (campfires), and Category 2 & Category 3 (open fires) starting Thursday, May 7, at 12:00 p.m. (noon). This prohibition will remain in place until October 31, 2026, or until the order is rescinded.

This fire ban applies to the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District Government, City of Port Alberni Local Government, and areas within the Coastal Fire Centre’s jurisdiction.

During this fire ban, the following activities are also restricted:
❌ Sky lanterns
❌ Binary exploding targets
❌ Fireworks
❌ Burn barrels or burn cages of any size or description
❌ Air curtain burners
❌ Carbonizers
❌ Controlled air incinerators
❌ Wood fired hot tubs, wood fired pizza ovens and other wood fired devices unless vented through a structure that has a flue and is incorporated in a building.

✅ Please note: This prohibition does not include the use of outdoor stoves. As per the Wildfire Regulation, an outdoor stove is a CSA-rated or ULC-rated device used outdoors for cooking, heat, or ambiance that burns charcoal briquettes, liquid fuel, or gaseous fuel, and has a flame height that is less than 15 cm tall.

May 4, International Firefighters’ Day, is more than a date.
It is a shared global moment — a moment to pause:

• To remember and honour the lives of those who have passed.

It is a day that we stand united by a profound sense of remembrance and respect. This day provides us with space to reflect on courage, on service freely given without expectation, and on lives lost while protecting others. A life lived in service of others is never forgotten.

• To commemorate the courage and commitment of those who serve today.

A chance to recognise and thank firefighters who stand ready - between danger and the community. Their courage, commitment, and quiet strength protect us all.

• To educate and inspire those who will serve in the future.

Across generations and across nations, we educate and inspire those who will serve next, those who will step forward and who will train, serve, and protect. And those who will carry the legacy forward.

As May 4 is observed across the globe, remember:

Honour the past.
Thank the present.
Inspire the future.

📚 Training Recap
Starting off the month, we had our monthly First Responder training night hosted by our very own First Responder Instructor, Jenna S., where we covered basic musculoskeletal anatomy and the digestive system, with an interactive game to finish off the night!

The following week, Captain Brandon F. hosted a training evolution that involved a mock car fire with entrapment. Crews arrived on Rescue 52 and utilized the CAFS (Compressed Air Foam System) to suppress the car fire, and completed their extrication. Rescue 52 specializes in automotive extrication. With a CAFS unit installed in the rear compartment. A 30-gallon CAFS tank can provide up to 600 gallons of usable firefighting foam, significantly reducing the amount of water needed. This allows us to bring fire suppression abilities alongside our extrication focused apparatus.

🫂 Community Involvement
BCVFD, alongside CCVFD and PAFD, attended the annual Hike to High Ground, helping with the children from Tsuma-as Elementary School learn about Emergency Preparedness!

📚 Training Recap
Starting off the month we had our monthly first responder medical night. We held a realistic medical scenario with multiple patients at a residence in our district. This allowed crews to respond with mock CAD notes, and limited information. Pushing our members to treat multiple patients with limited crew power. The following week we Captain Brandon F. held some firefighter survival training. We covered skills like MAYDAY calls, bailing out of a window, entanglement, going through walls. These skills play vital roles in helping our firefighters rescue themselves in the event of an emergency during structure fire activities. The following week we were invited to join Sproat Lake in training with pumping and tender operations from their dry hydrant!

Cleaning up woody debris around your property is a simple way to help reduce wildfire risk. Take advantage of our Free Curbside Pickup Program to dispose of small trees and branches.

✅ Accepted:
• Small trees
• Branches up to 4 inches in diameter
• Maximum pile size: 8 ft × 8 ft × 5 ft high
• Piles neatly stacked at curbside with butt ends facing the same direction

🚫 Not Accepted:
• Piles of gravel, dirt, or roots covered with dirt
• Construction debris, garbage, or organics
• Invasive species (blackberry vines, broom)
• Grass clippings, leaves, or soft material

This year, the ACRD is teaming up with Huu-ay-aht First Nations to host a fun‑filled and informative Hike to High Ground event! 🥾⛰️

We’ll be sharing all the details next week, but for now - mark your calendars and get ready to learn how to stay when you hear the siren sound.

CONSTRUCTION NOTICE / TRAFFIC ADVISORY

Location: Highway 4 & Beaver Creek Road
Duration: March 26, 2026 to April 09, 2026

Please be advised that over the next two weeks, there will be periodic closures at Beaver Creek Road off HWY 4.
During construction motorists can expect delays.
There will be a detour in place to minimize traffic impacts especially to emergency services, transit, local property
owners and commuters.
For your information, emergency services will always be given access.
