Head over to Tyee Landing this weekend on September 19 & 20 for the 2026 Coastal Cup #7 RC Sailing Regatta! Watch from the Quay to Quay pathway!

Competitors from BC and Washington State will race International One Metre (IOM) sailboats — 3½-foot boats powered entirely by the wind and controlled from shore.

🏁 Racing runs approximately 10:30 AM–3:30 PM both days, with fast 15-minute heats and plenty of action at the starting line.

📅 September 19 & 20

𝗣𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝗔𝗹𝗯𝗲𝗿𝗻𝗶’𝘀 𝗺𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗼𝗺𝘆 𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗲𝗻𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗼𝘂𝘀 𝗽𝗼𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗮𝗹, and it’s starting to get noticed nationally ⚓️

The Port Alberni Transshipment Hub (PATH) has been highlighted in the new 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗮 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗺𝗲𝗻𝘁 𝗦𝘂𝗺𝗺𝗶𝘁 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘂𝘀, alongside major port projects from across the country.

PATH is a proposed new shipping hub that would use Port Alberni’s deep-water harbour to help move goods through Canada’s west coast. If developed, it could bring significant new marine activity and jobs to our community.

This week at UBCM, I’ll be meeting with the 𝗠𝗶𝗻𝗶𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗿 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗝𝗼𝗯𝘀 to continue advocating for investment in Port Alberni’s shipbuilding and retrofit sector. An area we’ve already seen considerable investment.

Strong relationships with provincial and federal governments matter. They give us the opportunity to keep Port Alberni at the table, advocate directly for our priorities, and connect our community with the investment needed to turn opportunities like these into reality.

There is real momentum building in our marine economy, and I’m excited to keep pushing it forward.

And if you want to take a look at the CISP to see the PATH project, link is in the comments.

A container port needs a way off the dock. 🚂

PATH BC's proposed trans-shipment hub in Port Alberni could be a genuine win for the Island by reducing truck traffic, lowering emissions, and creating new economic activity in warehousing, distribution, and logistics optimization.

From a Nation building perspective, Port Alberni already sits on a rail connection to the E&N corridor, the same corridor we're fighting to restore for passenger service.

The BC Government’s own freight assessment proposed extending rail to Duke Point. Connecting DP World’s short-sea shipping operation in Nanaimo with a trans-shipment hub at PATH in Port Alberni could create a modern Island-wide freight network bypassing shared CANUS waterways, using a restored and extended railway to move containers efficiently between ports and communities.

The economic potential is significant. As Canada looks to expand trade, strengthen domestic supply chains, develop new ports, and reduce our vulnerability to disruptions, including those created by the ongoing US trade dispute, we need to think beyond individual projects and start building the infrastructure that connects them.

Our railway was originally built as a nation-building project. It can be rebuilt for the same imperative: connecting communities, moving people and goods, strengthening our economy, and giving Vancouver Island the infrastructure it needs to grow.
