te envers les idées en général, y compris les idées différentes des siennes; ouverte à de nouvelles expériences et à des horizons inédits; ouverte au dialogue, tolérante, généreuse; sensible aux besoins des êtres plus faibles; acquise à l’égalité fondamentale des êtres humains par-delà toute discrimination. Être libéral en politique, c’est mettre en pratique dans ce champ d’activité les traits qui caractérisent l’esprit libéral. C’est notamment être ouvert aux valeurs de changement et de progrès; mettre au premier rang les valeurs de liberté, de justice et de démocratie; être acquis à la discussion publique des enjeux et à la transparence de l’administration de la chose publique.

The values that underpin the Liberal Party stem for the most part from the key word that has shaped the party for more than a century, the word “liberal.” The Liberal Party holds this word in great esteem. It has been in use for more than a century, because it captures the spirit of the party. To be a liberal, according to the dictionary, is to be a person who is a friend of everything that is worthy of a free spirit; welcoming towards ideas in general, including ideas different from one’s own; open to new experiences and to broadening one’s horizons; open to dialogue, tolerant, generous, sensitive to the needs of the less fortunate; committed to the fundamental equality of all human beings which prevails over any discrimination. To be a liberal in politics is to put into practice the traits of the liberal spirit. It is especially to be open to the values of freedom, justice and democracy; to be committed to public discussion of issues and to transparency in the management of public affairs.
